Eagles’ Choi suspended after illegal steroid use

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said on Thursday that Hanwha Eagles outfielder Choi Jin-haeng has been handed with 30-game suspension for doping.

After receiving the test results from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology’s doping control center, the KBO said Choi tested positive for stanozolol, a type of synthetic anabolic steroid classified as a banned substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The KBO also fined the Eagles 20 million won ($18,000) for their poor management.

The Eagles said that Choi took a protein supplement containing the steroid about four or five times on the recommendation of an acquaintance, but stopped taking it after he discovered the supplement was not authorized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
