Author files suit over ‘Assassination’

Novelist Choi Jong-rim, who alleged last week that the recent historic film “Assassination” plagiarized his novel “Korean Memories,” has brought the dispute to court.

The Seoul Central District Court announced that the author Choi filed a lawsuit against director Choi Dong-hoon, production company Caper Film and distributor Showbox on Monday, seeking 10 billion won ($8.5 million) in damages, news outlets reported Wednesday.

The novelist also applied for an injunction to stop the film from being shown in theaters.

Choi Jong-rim is claiming that various elements from the movie, including the setting and the female character, highly resemble those of his book “Korean Memories,” published in 2003 and reprinted on Aug. 4.

In response, people affiliated with the film told Korean media outlet OSEN on Wednesday afternoon that “we don’t think we will lose the case.”

“We’re not exactly happy about getting embroiled in such an issue,” they said. “Even though the alleged claim of plagiarism is groundless, the opponent brought it to court, so we think it will be better to legally prove that [Choi’s] claim doesn’t make sense [before it goes any further].”
