Bracing for a fast-aging society

We soon will be living in an aging society with both rural and urban areas brimming with senior members./ 우리는 곧 도시 농촌 할 것 없이 부양해야 할 고령자만 넘치는 고령화 사회에 살게 될 것이다/ The statistics office presumes the ratio of Koreans aged 65 and over would shoot up to 32.4 percent of the total population by 2040 from current 13.1 percent./ 통계청은 한국의 65세 이상 노인 인구비율이 현재 13.1퍼센트에서 2040년에는 전체 인구의 32.4퍼센트를 넘게 될 것이라고 예측하고 있다/ Extremely aged society with the ratio of elderly members taking up more than a third of the population will soon arrive./ 노인인구 비율이 전체 인구의 1/3이상을 차지하는 극 고령화 사회가 곧 도래한다는 것이다/
Surge of aging population translates into soaring economic and social cost./ 노인 인구의 폭증으로 인한 가장 큰 문제는 경제적 사회적 부담의 증가다/ A hundred people aged between 15 and 64 eligible to work this year has to support 15 elderly people compared with five in 1970 with the burden tripling over the last 45 years./ 올해 일할 수 있는 15세에서 64세 사이의 100명이 부양해야 하는 고령자가 1970년 5명에서 지난 45년 동안의 세배나 되는 15명으로 늘었다/ In 2040, the number would surge to 57./ 2040년에는 부양해야 하는 수가 57명을 넘게 될 것이다/ The younger generation would have to support their older counterpart throughout their lives./ 청년 세대가 전 생애 동안 노인인구를 부양해야 한다는 의미다/ The poverty rate among the elderly that was 52.3 percent in 2006 reached 62.5 percent last year./ 노인들의 빈곤율은 2006년 52.3퍼센트에서 지난해에는 62.5퍼센트까지 올라갔다/ Older people are taking their own lives and committing crimes because of their miserable state./ 노인들은 비참한 상황을 참지 못해 자살을 하거나 범죄를 저지르고 있다/ The country may lose its farming foundation when elderly citizens that almost completely occupy the rural areas perish./ 거의 농촌을 지키고 있는 노인들이 숨을 거두면 농촌의 기반마저 붕괴될 것이다/
Without pre-emptive measures, youthful life and vivacity would soon dry out across the nation./ 선제적인 조치를 취하지 않으면 전국적으로 젊음과 활기가 곧 사라질 것이다/ The economy would become depressed, generating various social problems./경제가 침체할 수도 있으며 다양한 사회적 문제를 야기할 것이다/ The government and civilian society must work together to combat the inevitable phenomenon and challenges ahead./ 정부와 시민사회는 앞으로 발생할 불가피한 현상과 과제를 해결하기 위해 함께 노력해야 할 것이다/ The government must map and act out long-term welfare plan for the elderly./ 정부는 노인들을 위한 장기적인 복지 정책을 계획하고 실행해나가야 한다/
The best way to alleviate the shock from aging society would be increasing job opportunities and re-training programs for the retired age./ 고령화 사회로 인한 충격을 완화하는 가장 좋은 방법은 은퇴자를 위한 일자리를 늘리고 재취업을 위한 교육을 시키는 것이다/ The burden would be lessened for the younger population struggling with dearth of jobs and affordable homes and financial squeeze if elderly citizens can go on supporting themselves after retirement./ 만약 노인들이 은퇴 후에도 먹고 살 수만 있다면 일자리, 주거, 경제 문제로 시달리고 있는 젊은 세대와의 갈등을 줄여나갈 수 있을 것이다/
We must come up with networking formula to help the elderly continue contributing their expertise through business cooperatives or small enterprises./ 우리는 협동조합이나 소규모 기업 등을 통하여 전문성을 계속 살려나갈 수 있도록 노인들을 도울 수 있는 방안을 모색해야 할 것이다/ The civilian society also must be willing to incorporate the elderly members./ 시민사회 또한 노인들을 포용할 수 있도록 노력해야 한다/ The elderly must be regarded as active social members rather than supporting targets./ 노인들을 부양해야 하는 대상으로 보기보다는 활동적인 사회 구성원으로 보는 것이 바람직하다/ We all must join forces to avert generational conflict in rapid aging society./ 우리는 급속하게 고령화 되어 가고 있는 사회에서 발생할 수 있는 세대 간 갈등을 피하기 위해 함께 노력해야 할 것이다/
