More mobile phone users are choosing “20 percent discount” plans over subsidized smartphones. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced the plan in April, which allows customers to receive 20 percent off their mobile phone bills every month if they decline subsidies provided by mobile carriers.
A total of 3.82 million subscribers signed up for the plan from April 24 to Dec. 9 this year, or 16,640 a day. Before the new plan was introduced, the discount rate was 12 percent, and only 858 people signed up for the plan daily. Among those who bought new phones after the new plan was introduced, 21.1 percent chose the discount plan over the subsidy program.
