Korean embassy to open in Georgia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday the opening of an embassy in Georgia, as the two countries celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

Some 50 Koreans currently live in the former Soviet nation.

The Georgian Embassy in Korea, led by Ambassador Nikoloz Apkhazava, opened in 2011.

With no Korean Embassy in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, bilateral diplomatic issues between the two countries were formerly covered by diplomats in Azerbaijan.

Korean diplomat Kim In-hwan will serve as the charge d’affaires in Georgia for the time being, while the ambassadorial post will be led by the Korean ambassador in Azerbaijan.
