President Park pays visit to Asan car factory

President Park Geun-hye visited Hyundai Motor’s Asan plant in South Chungcheong on Friday to check on the production facilities and boost worker morale.

According to a Blue House representative, the president meant to facilitate progress on one of the current government’s vital tasks: innovation in the manufacturing sector. This marks her third visit to the regional working site after Daegu and Busan, ahead of the general election in April.

Park toured the plant’s smart production lines, which employ 4,000 workers and produce 300,000 cars annually, and heard detailed explanations of the technological status of Hyundai Motors’ upcoming electric vehicle, hybrid electric vehicle and autonomous vehicle products. The factory is equipped with one of the world’s most advanced robotic production systems.

“Smart factories, which combine digital design, the Internet of Things, big data and even artificial intelligence into its manufacturing process, is a core concept of the fourth industrial revolution,” said President Park, emphasizing the importance of expanding smart factory environments in the nation’s manufacturing sector.

The president also expressed hope that Korean automakers would collaborate with academia and business partners to compete in the global arena by producing driverless vehicles and eco-friendly cars.

Park sat in the passenger seat to try out the top automaker’s latest compact sedan, the Ioniq electric vehicle, which was showcased Friday at the 2016 International Electric Vehicle Expo in Jeju Island. Mass production of the model begins in June.
