Xi says he won’t stand for ‘war or chaos’ in Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Beijing will not allow “war or chaos” on the Korean Peninsula at a regional foreign ministers meeting on Thursday amid heightened tension in the region as Pyongyang shows signs it may conduct another nuclear test.

북한이 추가 핵실험을 강행할 조짐을 보이면서 지역내 긴장이 고조된 가운데 시진핑 중국 국가주석은 목요일 베이징에서 열린 지역 외교장관 회의에서 중국은 한반도에서 “전쟁이나 혼란”이 일어나는 것을 용납하지 않겠다고 말했다.
Foreign ministers, including the top envoys of South Korea, China and Russia, gathered for the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Beijing and later adopted a joint declaration strongly condemning North Korea for its nuclear and ballistic missile provocations.

한국, 중국, 러시아를 포함한 지역 내 각국 외교장관들이 베이징에서 열린 ‘아시아 교류 및 신뢰 구축 회의’에 참석했으며 이 회의에서 북한의 핵과 미사일 도발을 강력하게 규탄하는 공동선언문을 채택했다.
“China fully complies with the UN Security Council resolution on North Korea,” Xi said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the forum at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, while emphasizing Beijing’s commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

시 주석은 댜오위타이 국빈관에서 열린 회의의 축사에서 한반도 비핵화에 대한 중국의 확고한 의지를 강조하면서 “중국은 유엔 안보리 대북제재 결의안을 충실히 이행할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
“As a close neighbor of the peninsula, we will absolutely not permit war or chaos on the peninsula,” Xi said. “This situation would not benefit anyone.”

“한반도에 가까운 이웃으로 중국은 한반도에서 전쟁이나 혼란이 발생하는 것을 절대로 허용하지 않을 것이다. 그런 상황은 어느 누구에게도 유익하지 않을 것이다”고 시 주석은 말했다.
South Korean intelligence sources have assessed that Pyongyang is ready to conduct a fifth nuclear test at any moment, which would be in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

남한의 정보 관계자들은 북한이 언제든지 5차 핵실험을 실행할 준비가 돼 있다고 평가하고 있다. 추가 핵실험은 유엔 안보리 결의안 위반이다.
This includes the one adopted with the support of China on March 2, which called for the strongest-ever sanctions to be implemented on the North. North Korea conducted a fourth nuclear test in January despite Beijing’s warnings against it, followed by a long-range missile launch one month later.
이 결의안들 중에는 3월2일에 중국의 지지로 채택된 가장 강력한 대북제재안도 포함돼 있다. 북한은 중국의 경고에도 불구하고 1월에 4차 핵실험을 강행했고 한달 후에 장거리 미사일 실험도 실시했다.
In its joint declaration, the fifth CICA meeting of foreign ministers said they “condemn in the strongest terms” North Korea’s Jan. 6 nuclear test and launches that used ballistic missile technology on Feb. 7, April 15 and April 23 “in violation and flagrant disregard of the UN Security Council’s relevant resolutions.”

제5차 CICA 회의에서 채택된 공동선언문에서 외교장관들은 1월6일 핵실험과 2월7일, 4월15일, 4월23일 탄도미사일 실험발사는 “유엔 안보리 관련 결의안들을 명백하게 위반한 것으로 가장 강력한 표현으로 규탄한다”고 밝혔다.
