In search of ‘Mrs. Ye’
It was an unexpected encounter. Let’s turn the clock back to 120 years ago. I encountered a wife of a Korean diplomat who had gracefully lived in the foreign country of the United States. According to the May 1891 issue of Home Magazine, Mrs. Ye of the Korean legation hosted a wonderful party, and socialites were in attendance. First Lady Caroline Harrison — the wife of the 23rd President Benjamin Harrison — and wives of other were unofficially invited.Mrs. Ye was the wife of Ye Cha-yun, the acting minister of the Korean Empire legation in Washington DC who served from 1890 to 1893. She was social, was active in civilian diplomacy and was close to the First Lady. She destroyed the Confucian tradition of keeping wife out of husband’s business at the time. There are several media coverages on Mrs. Ye.
The February 4, 1900 issue of New York Daily Tribune reported that Mrs. Ye was smart and socially ambitious. She absorbed the freedom of the New World and adapted to the new environment, quickly learning English. She regularly went to Covenant Church near the legation, a Presbyterian church where President Harrison also attended. The November 30, 1892 issue of The Sun reported that Mrs. Ye became a member of the church and sat with her husband right behind President Harrison, and other Korean diplomats also followed.
There are little records of Mrs. Ye in Korea. Her full name is not known. She is born to the Bae family in Seongju and was a wife of Ye Cha-yun, who went to the United States as a translator for the first Ambassador to Washington Park Jung-yang. Ye Cha-yun was in charge of purchasing the legation building in January, 1891. Dr. Han Jong-su of the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation said that she was a modern woman faithfully serving her role as a diplomat. She studied at Roanoke College in Virginia and brought in Korean students. Dr. Han said that more research on Mrs. Ye is necessary.
The Washington legation is a symbol of Emperor Gojong’s self-reliant foreign policy. He sought to establish a relationship with the United States as a sovereign state, rejecting interference of China. Recently, postcards, paintings and wedding invitations illustrating the activities of the legation were discovered. The surname name, Bae from Seongju, was also highlighted. While the diplomatic efforts were hindered by imperial Japan, Emperor Gogjong’s attempts are valuable.
We can also reflect on history as the issue of the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) system is entangled over the Korean Peninsula. Seongju, North Gyeongsang, has been named the site for the U.S. antimissile defense system. It is the time that we desperately need to keep a right balance.

PARK JEONG-HO그건 뜻밖의 만남이었다. 120여 년 전으로 시계추를 돌렸다. 산 설고 물 설은 미국에서 당당하게 살아간 한 외교관 부인과 마주쳤다. 미국 잡지 ‘홈 매거진(Home Magazine)’ 1891년 5월호의 한 대목을 인용한다. ‘한국 공사관의 Mrs. Ye는 멋진 파티를 열었는데, 유명한 사람들이 예의를 갖췄다. 해리슨 영부인(미국 23대 대통령 벤저민 해리슨의 부인)과 다른 각료 부인들이 비공식 초청을 받았다.’ ‘Mrs. Ye’는 대한제국 주미 워싱턴공사관 서리공사를 지낸 이채연(재임기간 1890~93)의 아내다. 미국 대통령 영부인과 가깝게 지낼 만큼 사교, 나아가 민간외교에 적극적이었다. 부부유별(夫婦有別)이 강하게 남아 있었던 시대의 여성상을 보기 좋게 무너뜨렸다. 그를 다룬 미국 언론의 보도는 제법 많다. 뉴욕 데일리 트리뷴은 1900년 2월 4일자에서 이렇게 전한다. ‘Mrs. Ye는 총명했고 사교적 열망이 컸다. 신세계의 자유를 빨아들였고 적응력이 놀라웠다. 영어 공부에도 놀라운 재능을 보였다. 코버넌트 교회(공사관 인근에 있던 교회)에 정기적으로 나갔다.’ 코버넌트 교회는 해리슨 대통령이 다녔던 장로교 교회다. 더 선(The Sun)지는 1892년 11월 30일자에서 ‘Mrs. Ye는 교회 멤버가 됐다. 남편과 함께 해리슨 대통령 바로 뒷좌석에 앉았다. 다른 한국 외교관이 그를 따라 했다.’ Mrs. Ye에 관한 국내 기록은 거의 없다. 정확한 이름도 모른다. 성주(星州) 배씨로 워싱턴 초대공사였던 박정양의 번역관으로 미국에 갔던 이채연의 부인 정도로 알려졌다. 이채연은 1891년 1월 워싱턴공사관 매입 당시 책임자였다. 국외소재문화재재단 한종수 박사는 “배씨는 외교관 역할에 충실한 신여성이었다. 버지니아주 르어노크대도 다니며 한국 유학생도 유치했다. 그에 대한 본격 연구가 필요하다”고 했다. 워싱턴공사관은 고종 황제가 펼쳤던 자주외교의 상징이다. 중국 청나라의 간섭을 물리치고 주권국가로서 미국과의 관계구축을 도모했다. 당시 공사관의 활동을 보여주는 엽서·그림·결혼식 초대장이 최근 발굴돼 화제가 됐다. ‘성주 배씨’ 이름도 처음 조명됐다. 당시의 외교적 노력은 비록 일제에 의해 꺾였지만 그 가치마저 부인할 수 없을 터다. 사드(THAAD) 문제로 더욱 꼬인 오늘의 한반도를 비추는 거울도 된다. 마침 경북 성주가 사드 배치 지역으로 결정됐다. 우리의 중심잡기가 더욱 절실한 때다. 박정호 논설위원
