Web cartoonist Kim Poong will host an “Insect Food Cooking Show” (working title) at Yecheon Insects Bio Expo County, held in Yecheon County, North Gyeongsang, on July 31.
At the event, Poong will make a gimbap (rice roll) that includes fried freeze-dried crickets.
“This is the first time for me to use crickets as the main ingredient for cooking,” the cartoonist said on Wednesday. “I ate some while practicing [cooking], and they tasted similar to stir-fried shrimp.”
Kim also added that his friends tasted the dish and enjoyed it - until they were told what was inside.
Kim will be joined at the event by several other chefs, including Martin Muller, the executive chef at the Grand Hilton Seoul.
They are scheduled to introduce different recipes over the course of two hours, and the audience will be able to evaluate the finished products afterwards.
The expo will kick off July 30 and continue throughout Aug. 15.
Kim is currently starring in JTBC’s reality cooking show, “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator,” in which he shares simple and quick recipes.
