The main opposition Minjoo Party of Korea is being swept up in a debate over its identity and contentious manifesto ahead of the national convention to select the new leadership on Aug. 27. An overheated debate on these issues could overwhelm the convention with ideological wrangling, taking away from discussions of policies for the people and economy.

The Minjoo Party rejected the idea of rewriting its manifesto to be more in tune with the broad concept of “citizens” proposed by the convention preparation committee and instead chose a more specific, hard-line platform in support of “workers.” The new platform would require the party to work towards improving the rights of “the workers, farmers, small employers and the middle class” — instead of the more centrist “rights of citizens” as proposed by the preparation committee.

The new platforms are more specific compared to the current platform of “promoting the rights of workers and citizens.” As it is outdated to differentiate workers and citizens, it would be appropriate for the party to revise the platform to make it more general and universal.

But candidates like Choo Mi-ae, Lee Jong-kul, and Kim Sang-kon running for the new party leadership all opposed the removal of the phrase “workers,” saying it goes against the party’s roots. Due to the strong protests from the activists-turned-lawmakers, the party instead decided to list the working class in its new platform. The new platform initially suggested creating a special cooperative zone in the Yellow Sea to reflect increased threats from North Korea, but dropped it, also in fear of stoking controversy over the party’s identity.

The opposition regained its strong footing in the legislature after the former dissident faction led by Moon Jae-in and other loyalists to former President Roh Moo-hyun stepped aside and dropped the hard-line image under the leadership of recruited centrist Kim Chong-in before the April election. Watching the fiasco over the phrase “workers,” Kim lamented that all the endeavors to change the image of the party were going down the drain.

The Minjoo Party is once again dominated by the former followers of Roh and Moon after outside members like Ahn Cheol-soo left the party. But the party has no future if it clings to the past and declares itself a party for workers.

더불어민주당이 8월27일 전당대회를 앞두고 정체성 논쟁,선명성 투쟁 일변도로 흐르고 있어 걱정스럽다. 과도한 정체성·선명성 경쟁은 피폐한 민생문제에 대한 집중력을 헝클어트리고 현실과 동떨어진 관념논쟁으로 치닫기 마련이다.
더민주는 엊그제 비상대책위 회의에서 전당대회 준비위가 올린 '시민 중심'강령 개정안을 거부하고 구(舊)강령 보다 더 강력한 '노동자 중심'으로 되돌아 갔다. 강령 전문이 '노동자와 시민의 권리향상'(구강령)→'시민의 권리 향상'(강령 개정안)→'노동자·농어민·소상공인 등 서민과 중산층의 권리 향상'(신강령)으로 변화했다. 노동자는 속성상 시민에 포함되기에 '노동자와 시민'을 같은 수준에서 병렬한 구강령은 문제가 있는 것이었다. 개정안에서 이를 보다 포괄적이고 보편적인 '시민'이란 범주로 묶은 건 국민정당을 지향하는 더민주로선 적절하다고 하겠다.
그런데 추미애·이종걸·김상곤 당대표 후보들이 "노동자 삭제는 정체성을 훼손하는 것"이라고 반발하고 최재성·정청래 의원 등 운동권 출신들이 강력히 반대하면서 계층·계급적 용어가 구구절절 나열된 형태로 변질된 것이다. 또 강령 개정안엔 북한 김정은의 핵·미사일 위협 상황을 반영해 '서해평화협력특별지대 추진'이 삭제됐는데 정체성 문제가 제기되면서 원래대로 복원됐다.
더민주는 4·13총선 전 친노·친문 패권주의가 지배하는 운동권 정당 이미지로는 도저히 선거를 치를 수 없다는 판단에 따라 문재인 당시 대표가 물러나면서 보수·중도 성향의 김종인 비대위 대표를 영입해 오늘에 이르렀다. 김종인 대표가 당 강령안 번복 소동을 보면서 "노동자를 삭제했다고 난리를 치지만 이제껏 당이 노동자를 위해 한 일이 뭔가""급할 때는 이런저런 소리 다 하더니 이제 당이 살아날만하니까 딴 소리를 한다"고 평했는데 정곡을 찌른 얘기다.
더민주 당권 주자들이 정체성·선명성 경쟁에 목을 매다시피하는 건 당이 안철수 의원 등 이질 세력이 떠나면서 이른바 친노·친문 당원들 일색이 됐기 때문이다. 친노·친문 세력한테 잘보이겠다고 노동자 정당 행세를 한다고 해서 곧이 곧대로 믿을 사람은 없을 것이다.
