After alienation, a sudden success: Gukkasten finds itself an audience after vocalist wins big on MBC show

For almost a decade, Guckkasten was known to only a small number of devoted fans. This year would have been no different if it weren’t for band member Ha Hyun-woo, who appeared earlier this year on MBC’s music survival program “King of Mask Singer” - and won nine times straight.
Since every participant’s face is covered with a mask on the program, he or she is evaluated solely on singing ability. The show’s format definitely worked out for Ha, a highly talented vocalist who surprised audiences with his high notes.
Ha’s sudden popularity presented the band with a number of opportunities, including its latest domestic tour.
“At our most recent concert, people of all ages came,” said Ha during press event right before the “2016 Guckkasten Domestic Tour Squall - Seoul Encore Concert,” which took place on Sunday at Jamsil Sports Complex in southern Seoul.
“One of them was a person over 70 years old, who started searching for Guckkasten’s music on YouTube after I appeared on ‘King of Mask Singer’ and eventually fell in love with the band. According to that fan, Guckkasten is ‘Korea’s Beatles.’”
Ha is now able to eat meat whenever he wants to thanks to the increased popularity, a marked improvement compared to the past few years. Music alone was not able to feed the band, whose four members had to work in factories to get by. Although many adults often told the members to quit music when they were in their 20s, they were persistent.
“Our members have lived lives as if we were defective products,” Ha said, adding that this sense of being unable to blend into Korean society became the theme of Guckkasten’s music. Even if few were listening, the members used the band as way to express their frustration to the outside world.
“I had anger. Although I imagined living the sweet life I had dreamed about in my 20s, it didn’t come true because I found myself working in factories. There was this gap between our members and the world, and we tried to bridge that gap with music. Eventually that deficiency worked as a nourishment for us to develop.”
Guckkasten means “Chinese kaleidoscope” in German, and the members gave themselves the name because they liked how dramatically images could be altered with a slight tap to the device. That ability to change reflects the band’s ambition to try all different types of music genres, including electronic and acoustic, without worrying about defining themselves.
Based on the recent successes, it seems the bridge the members wanted to build will only get sturdier with the band’s endless changes and variations.

하현우 “이젠 고기 먹고 싶을 때 먹어가며 음악”
밴드 국카스텐은 데뷔 10년 만인 올해 첫 전국 투어 콘서트 ‘스콜(Squall)’을 열었다. 지난 6월부터 시작해 전국 5개 도시를 돌았는데 전석 매진됐다. “우리나라에서 밴드 활동하며 이렇게 많은 사람에게 관심 받는 건 굉장히 힘든 일”이라고 멤버들이 말할 정도로 반응이 뜨거웠다. ‘우리 동네 음악대장’이 기폭제가 됐다. 국카스텐의 보컬리스트인 하현우(35)의 또 다른 이름이다.
그는 올 상반기 이 예명으로 MBC 예능프로그램 ‘복면가왕’에 출연해 전국적인 스타가 됐다. 가면으로 얼굴을 가린 채 음악대장은 노래 불렀고, 9연승을 거뒀다. 프로그램 역사상 최장수 가왕이라는 기록도 세웠다.
21일 전국투어의 서울 앙코르 공연을 앞두고 서울 종합운동장 내에서 열린 기자회견에서 하현우는 “밴드와 함께 나가는 무대가 아니라 혼자 나가야 해서 걱정했는데 결국 복면가왕을 통해 내 목소리를 많이 알렸고, 사람들도 적응하고 편안하게 여기는 것 같다”고 말했다.
음악대장 하현우를 최장수 가왕으로 만든 건 그의 목소리였다. 그는 복면가왕의 두 번째 무대에서 신해철의 ‘민물 장어의 꿈’과 넥스트의 ‘라젠카, 세이브 어스(Lazenca, Save Us)’를 부르며 끝없는 음역대를 과시했다. 낮디낮은 저음은 정확했고, 찌를 듯한 고음은 안정적이었다. 국카스텐으로 10년간 살아온 그의 목소리는 본디 그랬고, 사람들은 뒤늦게 알게 됐다. 이날도 공연이 시작되기 네 시간 전부터 다양한 연령대의 사람들이 국카스텐 로고가 적힌 티셔츠를 입고 공연장을 찾았다.
“이번 콘서트에 정말 다양한 연령대의 관객이 찾아주셨어요. 그중 일흔이 넘은 관객이 복면가왕에서 제 목소리를 듣고 감동받아서 유튜브로 음악을 찾다가 국카스텐에 빠져들었다고 전해 들었어요. 그분이 하신 말씀이래요. ‘국카스텐은 한국의 비틀스다’고. 긍정적이에요. 우리 같은 삶을 사는 사람들도 충분히 공감할 수 있는 이야기를 국카스텐이라는 이름으로 만들고 싶어요.”
국카스텐의 인지도가 올라간 덕에 지금은 고기 먹고 싶을 때 사먹어가며 음악할 수 있게 됐다. 하지만 지난 10년의 세월은 녹록지 않았다. 음악은 먹고사는 현실적인 문제를 해결해 주지 않았다. 멤버들은 화장품 공장, 섬유공장 등 온갖 공장에서 일했다. 공장 사람들은 이십대 꿈나무 뮤지션에게 이렇게 말했다고 한다. “어른으로서, 인생선배로서 해주는 말인데 음악하지 마.”
하현우는 “최근까지만 해도 계속 투잡 쓰리잡을 뛰었다. 사실 우리는 우리가 불량품인 듯 생각하며 살았다”고 말했다. 세상 속에서 잘 융화되지 못하고 모자라기만한 존재라는 생각이 자꾸 들었다고 한다. 그런 생각이 국카스텐이 만드는 음악의 뿌리가 됐다고 한다. 세상 속에서 살아야 하니 음악으로 세상과 대화해보자 싶었다.
“분노가 있었어요. 20대가 되면 자유롭게 원하는 모습대로 세상을 달콤하게 살 수 있을 것 같았는데, 막상 돼보니 공장에서 일하고 있잖아요. 세상과 우리의 간극은 있고, 모자란 부분을 음악으로 채우려고 했어요. 결국 결핍됐던 것들이 자양분이 됐고 지금은 감사해요.”
국카스텐은 독일어로 ‘중국식 만화경’이라는 뜻이다. 만화경을 손으로 톡톡 돌리면 그 안의 이미지가 변화무쌍하게 바뀌는 게 좋아서 밴드명으로 지었다. 멤버들은 국카스텐의 음악도 변화무쌍하게 하고 싶다고 했다. 일렉트로닉, 어쿠스틱 등 장르를 가리지 않고, 음악적 정체성을 고민하지 않고 담고 싶은 이야기는 하나다. ‘세상과 우리의 이야기.’ 국카스텐의 이야기는 계속 만들어질 테고 음악 또한 변화무쌍하게 흐를 전망이다.
