Hyundai Wia, an auto parts manufacturer affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, said Tuesday that it is the first Korean manufacturer to develop an eco-friendly four-wheel-drive system.
The e-4WD (electronic 4-wheel drive) runs on electricity and can be installed in both full electric and hybrid vehicles.
The key technology used in the system is the installation of the motor and inverter in the rear of the front-wheel-drive car so it can easily power the rear tires.
The system is poised to enhance the fuel efficiency compared to other all-wheel drive cars because it doesn’t need extra fuel to convey the energy generated from the engine to make the rear wheels operate. Hyundai Wia said fuel efficiency has increased by nearly 30 percent than the existing all-wheel drive vehicles.
