Lee Juck strives to be a better artist : Always contemplating on his next move, the singer is looking ahead

“I love the story since it shows the indescribable power of music,” said the 42-year old singer. Lee said he has lived his life as daring as he could since he chose his name. He was a part of a number of musical groups, debuting as part of a duo called Panic with singer Kim Jin-pyo in 1995. He then went on to release an album with singer Kim Dong-ryul under the group name Carnival, and was even a part of the band Gigs with musicians Han Seong-won and Jung Jae-il.
The singer has been known for performing frequently in smaller venues since 2004.
“I wanted to provide an accurate portrayal of the songs that are created nonchalantly at home,” said the singer. Lee’s Korean tour “Stage,” visited small theaters in twelve cities from March 2015 until February of this year. He visited twelve cities and held 66 performances, selling out every show in the process. After a short break, the singer is at it again, but this time, he is looking towards larger venues. He will embark on a short tour of large stadiums, starting at Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul on Nov. 26, and will go on to visit Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan.
The singer said he was contemplating on how to release his upcoming record next year in an interview with the JoongAng Ilbo.
“I’m wondering whether to release all of my songs in one studio album, or to release them separately in bundles,” said the singer, who admitted that he has been thinking about this specific problem for almost eight years.
“I’m concerned about songs that are released individually but disappear due to lack of interest,” Lee continued. “If a song doesn’t appear on the music charts, nobody realizes it was released in the first place. Meanwhile, an album with a collection of songs is able to come together to tell a single story. It’s different from a single. However, the way music consumption works has changed [to favor singles], so I am constantly thinking about this.”
Lee is recognized in the music industry for being both an intellectual and emotional singer-songwriter, and admired by many for his particularly impressive vocal skills. His hit songs, which include “Snail,” “Run Across the Sky” and “Lie Lie Lie” are celebrated by fans of music and frequently covered by fellow singers on popular television music programs.
Q. How would you look back on your 22-year music career?
A. I tried many things [in music] out of curiosity. Thanks to those experiences, my skills grew as a result. But, my records didn’t all become successful. I only ever took the first place trophy on a weekly music ranking show maybe once or twice. My song “Running Across the Sky” only became popular five years after it was released, thanks to it being played on [MBC variety show] Infinite Challenge. I tell myself not to feel upset [about results] since there is always a chance for a song to become recognized later on. However, I still find myself constantly worried about the future. I wonder whether my expiration date has come when it’s time to release a new song or go up on stage.
But don’t you have many hit songs?
Releasing a new record is like receiving permission to keep singing. I want to hear about my latest work being my greatest work. It’s nice to sing my old hit songs on stage, but it’s also important to have new material. I can’t keep relying on my past efforts. It would be nice to hear my two young daughters praise me when they see me at a concert in the future.
Some say you have become less experimental.
The same people would dislike it if I make another song similar to my Panic days. I think that the expectations people have of me are changing. Just like how baseball players change positions, I am also shifting my musical location. But, I still try to experiment as much as I can. When I covered the rock song “Don’t Worry, Dear” by Jeon In-kwon for the “Reply 1988” soundtrack, I played it using only an acoustic guitar. I also experimented with my single “Lie Lie Lie” off of my latest album by not including a chorus. It’s easy to make lyrics that are strong, but it’s difficult to make those lyrics matter and move people’s hearts.
Regarding his upcoming concert, the singer said, “I wondered what state of mind I should have while singing in today’s society. I came to the conclusion that I wanted this to be a time where we support and understand each other.”
“I have written many songs, such as “UFO,” that are visually expressive,” Lee continued. “I am attempting to portray that in the upcoming performance. By utilizing lights, video, and the stage, I am planning to go all-out with the performances of my songs. There is no better time to do it!”

내 유통기한 늘 불안…‘최근작이 최고’라는 말 듣고싶다
스스로 ‘적(笛)’이라 이름 짓고 20여 년을 노래했다. ‘피리부는 사나이’ 우화가 좋아 지은 이름대로 살았다. 가수 이적(42)은 “음악이 가지는 설명할 수 없는 힘을 보여주는 이야기라 좋아한다”고 했다. 도전적인 이름처럼 실험하며 살았다. 1995년 김진표와 패닉으로 데뷔한 후, 김동률과 결성한 프로젝트 그룹 카니발, 한성원·정재일 등과 함께 한 밴드 긱스를 거쳤다.
2004년부터 소극장 공연을 시작했다. “집에서 흥얼흥얼 노래 만들었을 때, 태어난 그대로의 모습을 전하고 싶어 시작했다”는 공연은 12년째 이어지고 있다. 지난해 3월 ‘무대’란 이름으로 시작한 소극장 공연은 올 2월에서야 끝났다. 전국 12개 도시에서 66회 공연을 했고 전석 매진 기록을 세웠다. 숨 잠깐 돌린 후 그는 더 큰 무대의 공연을 준비하고 있다. 26~27일 서울 잠실 실내체육관 공연을 시작으로 광주·대구·부산에서 공연한다. 한창 연습으로 분주한 그를 서울 강남의 한 카페에서 만났다. 그는 “내년에 새 앨범도 낼 예정”이라고 말했다. 또 “정규 앨범으로 발표할지, 몇 곡씩 쪼개 발표할지를 놓고 고민 중”이라고 했다. 7~8년째 같은 고민인데 그러다 결국 정규 앨범을 내곤 한다는 말도 덧붙였다.
“한두곡 노래를 발표했다가 뜨지 않으면 사라지는 게 아쉬워요. 온라인 차트에서 사라져버리면 그 노래가 나왔는지 아무도 몰라요. 앨범은 여러 곡이 모여 집합을 이루고, 하나의 이야기를 만들거든요. 낱개의 곡과 또 다르죠. 그렇더라도 이제 음악 감상방법이 달라졌으니 고민은 반복될 수밖에 없죠.”
지적이면서도 감성적인 싱어송라이터로도 유명한 이적은 시원하게 내지르는 특유의 보컬과 함께 가요계를 종횡무진 달려왔다. ‘달팽이’ ‘하늘을 달리다’ ‘거짓말 거짓말 거짓말’ 등 그의 히트곡들은 가창력을 뽐내는 경연 프로그램에서 애창곡처럼 불리기도 한다. 서울대 사회학과 출신의 ‘엄친아’ 이미지까지 보태 성공한, 엘리트 뮤지션으로 불리기도 하는 그다.
질의 :22년 음악인생을 돌아보자면.
응답 :＂호기심에 이것저것 했다. 그러면서 실력이 많이 늘었다. 앨범이 다 잘 된 게 아니다. 게다가 지상파 음악방송에서 1위를 했던 적도 두번 될까 싶다. ‘하늘을 달리다’도 예능 프로그램 ‘무한도전’에 나오면서 만든지 5년이 지나 음원 차트 1위를 했다. 돌아 돌아 노래가 살아남는 경우가 있으니 잘 만들어 놓자, 일희일비하지 말자고 저를 다독인다. 하지만 아직도 노심초사한다. 가수로서 이적의 유통기한이 끝나버린 게 아닌 지, 새 노래를 발표하거나 공연 앞두고 늘 불안하다.”
질의 :숱한 히트곡이 있지 않나.
응답 :＂새 앨범은 허락 같은 거다. 노래 더 해도 된다는. ‘최근작이 최고작이다’라는 이야기 듣고 싶다. 공연에서 옛날 히트곡을 부르는 것도 좋지만 계속 부를 신곡이 있다는 게 중요하다. 과거를 팔면서 살 수 없다. 이제 유치원 다니는 두 딸이 중·고등학생이 돼 공연장에 와서 ‘아빠 괜찮네’라고 했으면 좋겠다.”
질의 :가요계 안에서 이적의 자리는 어디쯤일까.
응답 :＂게릴라 같기도 하다. 주류 안에서 비주류인척하기도 했고. 그런데 제가 하는 음악이 K팝 시장을 볼 때 트렌드는 아니지 않나. 그렇게 보면 또 비주류 뮤지션이다. 주류는 이 주류(酒類)만 좋아하고(웃음).”
질의 :예전보다 실험성이 줄었다는 이야기도 있다.
응답 :“패닉 시절처럼 센 노래를 지금 만들면 별로라고 그럴 거다. ‘응답하라 1988’ OST에 수록된 ‘걱정 말아요 그대’ 를 사람들이 좋아하듯, 가수 이적에게 기대하는 것이 달라지고 있는 것 같다. 야구에서 포지션 변경을 하듯, 위치변경을 하고 있을 뿐이다. 그래도 실험은 계속하고 있다. 전인권 선배의 원곡인 록 ‘걱정 말아요 그대’를 통기타 하나로 연주하며 읊조리듯 리메이크한 것도, 지난 앨범 타이틀곡인 ‘거짓말 거짓말 거짓말’의 후렴부가 없는 것도 그렇다. 센 가사를 만드는 건 쉽다. 계속 남아서 사람의 마음을 움직이는 노래를 만드는 게 더 어렵다.”
그는 최근 SNS에 “이 황량한 겨울바람 속에 노래는 어떤 의미일까요. 제 노래를 들으러 와주시는 분들께 진심으로 감사의 인사를 올립니다”라고 썼다. 이적은 “요즘 같은 시국에 공연을 하는데 어떤 마음으로 노래해야 할지 고민됐다. 숨 돌리고 서로 응원하고 공감하는 시간이었으면 좋겠다”고 말했다. 이번 공연의 제목도 ‘울려퍼지다’다. 지금까지의 공연 중 가장 큰 규모라고 했다.
“제 노래 중에 ‘UFO’처럼 굉장히 시각적인 노래들이 꽤 있어요. 무대에서 제대로 구현해 볼 참입니다. 영상·조명·무대 장치 총동원해서 제 노래를 원없이 보여줄 거에요. 언제 또 해보겠느냐는 생각으로!”
