Splitting off

A group of lawmakers from the minor opposition People’s Party on Sunday hold a ceremony at the National Assembly in Seoul to mark the launch of the preparatory committee for the creation of a new political party in defiance of their chairman Ahn Cheol-soo’s plans to merge with the center-right Bareun Party. Sixteen lawmakers, including Reps. Park Jie-won, Chung Dong-young and Chun Jung-bae, took part in the ceremony, which drew some 1,000 attendees. The splinter party’s name roughly translates as the Democratic Peace Party. [YONHAP]
