The man of many faces finds a new side to himself: Actor Oh Dal-su embraces his inner action hero in ‘Dectective K: Secret of the Living Dead’

In “Secret of the Living Dead,” the multi-talented detective Kim Min (played by Kim Myung-min) and his assistant Han Seo-pil (played by Oh) dig into a murder case involving a vampire.
Kim Seok-yun, the director of the “Detective K” series, tried something new with Oh in the most recent installment. The prominent actor, whose films have sold more than an accumulated 100 million tickets, becomes an action hero in one of the film’s most memorable scenes.
A parody of a scene from “Old Boy” (2003) finds Han fighting off bad guys with a weapon. “While we were filming, I was worried that I may have done too much, but after watching the complete movie, I see that it blended quite well. I bet, director Park Chan-wook [of “Old Boy”] will like it too.”
The movie imitates in detail the famous battle scene from “Old Boy” featuring Oh Dae-su (played by Choi Min-shik) knocking numerous opponents down with a single hammer. Although the combat scene is not as bloody as the original, Han beats up the villains quite surprisingly.
“Detective K” does not only recreate a scene from “Old Boy” because it is a famous movie, but also because it is meaningful to Oh. Fifteen years ago, as a relatively young actor, Oh played a clumsy yet impressive villain in the now-classic film and showed off his potential as an actor. Oh said he didn’t watch the movie again to prepare for this film because he had seen it “over and over whenever I had time, so I have memorized everything. It is surely a good movie.”
The director of the movie said, “As the story unfolds, it was difficult to put in only hilarious scenes. While thinking of a way to add an impressive scene, ‘Old Boy’ came in mind.”
In the beginning of the movie, Kim and Han disguise themselves as a magician and an assistant in order to sneak into a circus taking place in the village. In front of an audience, they demonstrate a magic trick known as “Man in a Box,” where the assistant is locked in a cabinet while the magician slides blades into the box. Han, who is locked in the box, later faints after he bleeds too much.

“This movie series uses a lot of slapstick humor, and the scene [where Han is locked in a box] is one of the film’s most exaggerated examples,” said Oh.
Prior to the bloody magic show, the duo shows off a dance that is both appealing and witty. Hoping to make the dance both “easy and cute,” the director asked comedian Lee Soo-geun to advise the duo before they filmed their dance scenes.
After having worked together on three films, Kim Myung-min calls Oh his “wife.”
“I felt like I was meeting my wife who left home a long time ago,” said Kim after reuniting with Oh after three years. “Dal-su has something attractive about him that is hard to describe. He looks somewhat indifferent and uncaring, but sometimes he can be very gentle. I tried really hard to befriend him,” revealed Kim.
Oh doesn’t seem to push him away either. “For a while, we were not in touch because both of us were too busy. One day, I thought, ‘Today is a good day to go out and eat some broiled eel’ and, as if he was reading my mind, he called me and said, ‘Hey, what about some broiled eel for dinner?’”
In the movie, Kim even kisses Han on cheek, and licks Han’s finger, in order to hide blood from a mysterious lady played by Kim Ji-won. “I just did it thinking ‘This is part of the slapstick.’”
Like Sherlock Holmes has his best mate Watson, Han is Kim’s best friend.
“If I was unsure of something, I asked the director, who is my first audience. If he says ‘Just trust me,’ then it is good. Although the characters are not totally realistic, I think the movie has its fun and emotional parts as well,” said Oh.
Unlike his character, who is quite indifferent to women, Oh is a rather shy actor in reality. Kim said, “Dal-su looks even more handsome in the third film.” After hearing this, Oh said “He doesn’t have to lie because we make a good team. I don’t do any special treatments to my face, but it is good to hear that something has changed for the better.”

1억 배우 오달수의 허풍 “연기에 욕심 없어요”
8년 차 탐정 콤비 김명민·오달수(50)의 쫀득한 호흡은 역시나 웃음의 뇌관을 건드린다. 특히 출연작 통산 1억 관객을 모은 오달수의 존재감은 남다르다. 8일 개봉하는 ‘조선명탐정:흡혈괴마의 비밀’(이하 ‘조선명탐정3’) 얘기다. 앞서 1·2편 합해 865만 관객을 모은 코믹 사극 시리즈 ‘조선명탐정’의 세 번째 영화다. 신출귀몰 명탐정 김민(김명민 분)과 개장수 서필(오달수 분)이 이번에는 조선판 뱀파이어 ‘흡혈괴마’의 연쇄살인사건을 파헤친다.
1편부터 내리 연출을 맡아온 김석윤 감독은 이번 영화에서 서필에게 역대급으로 다채로운 변신술을 선사했다. 서필을 연기한 오달수를 지난달 30일 서울 삼청동에서 만나 변신에 얽힌 얘기를 들었다.
오달수 스스로 이번 영화 최고로 꼽은 변신 장면은 ‘올드보이’ 패러디다. 그는 “촬영할 땐 ‘오버’ 아닌가 걱정했는데, 완성된 영화를 보니 기우였다”면서 “박찬욱 감독도 보면 재밌어할 것 같다”며 웃었다. 이번 영화는 ‘올드보이’에서 롱테이크로 촬영된 주인공 오대수(최민식 분)의 장도리 액션신을 꽤 세세하게 재현했는데, 오달수의 코믹한 연기가 의외로 박력 있다. 바로 직전 장면에서 솥뚜껑 열기에 자연 파마된 헤어스타일도 오대수 판박이다.
15년 전 ‘올드보이’는 오달수가 조연으로 출연했던 영화다. 아직 스크린에서 낯선 얼굴이었던 그는 허술하고도 인상적인 악역으로 관객에게 눈도장을 확실히 찍었다. 오달수는 이번 패러디를 위해 영화를 다시 볼 필요도 없었다고 했다. “시간 날 때마다 꺼내봐서 다 외웁니다. 명작이니까요.” 김석윤 감독은 “(드라마가 무르익는) 영화 뒤편으로 갈수록 코미디를 자주 보여주기 힘들어서, 가장 효과적인 ‘한방’을 찾다 보니 ‘올드보이’가 나왔다”고 설명했다.
영화 초반에는 요란한 의상과 시뻘건 눈 화장을 곁들여 마술사로 변신한 탐정 콤비가 등장한다. 서커스단에 위장 잠입한 이들은 사람이 들어간 나무상자에 칼을 꽂는 묘기를 부리는데, 상자에 들어가는 쪽은 당연히 서필이다. 서필은 1편 ‘조선명탐정:각시투구꽃의 비밀’(2011)에선 김민 대신 화살을 맞아 혼절하고, 2편 ‘조선명탐정:사라진 높의 딸’(2015)에선 김민에게 깜빡 속아 혼자 절벽에서 뛰어내렸다가 죽을 뻔한 전적이 있다. 이번에는 김민의 허술한 마술쇼에서 온몸으로 칼을 한 다발 받아내게 된다. 오달수의 말을 빌면 “‘조선명탐정’식 코미디는 과장되고 어떤 극치까지 올리는 슬랩스틱”인데, 그 최대치를 보여주는 장면이다.
살벌한 마술쇼에 앞서 서필과 김민은 풍악을 비트 삼아 콤비 율동도 선보인다. 싱거운데 은근히 중독성 있는 안무가 백미다. “쉽고 귀여운 춤”을 바란 김석윤 감독이 개그맨 이수근에게 의뢰해 안무를 하고, 촬영 현장에서 감독이 직접 ‘칼 군무’를 지도했다고 한다.
벌써 세 번째 호흡을 맞춘 오달수를 두고 김명민은 “와이프”란 표현을 썼다. 김명민은 2편 이후 3년 만에 오달수와 상봉한 소감을 “오랜만에, 집 나간 와이프를 다시 만난 기분”이라며 “달수 형은 범접할 수 없는 새침함과 도도함이 있다. 밀당의 고수다. 형과 친해지려고 정말 노력했다”고 했다. 오달수도 싫지 않은 눈치다. 그는 “서로 바빠서 연락을 못 하다가 문득 오늘은 명민이랑 장어나 먹으러 가면 좋겠다고 생각한 날, 거짓말처럼 김명민에게 ‘장어 먹자’는 연락이 왔다”고 전한다.
영화에서 두 사람은 진한 스킨십도 소화한다. 묘령의 여인(김지원 분)에게 빠져 정신 못 차리는 김민에게 서필은 “덥다. 갱년기가 온 것 같다”며 투정하며 느닷없이 신체 접촉을 시도한다. “슬랩스틱이라 생각하고 받아들였죠.” 오달수의 말이다.
셜록 홈스에게 왓슨이 있다면, 김민에겐 이처럼 서필이 있다. 그때그때 필요에 따라 변신하다 보니, 함께 도망치다 600만 불의 사나이 뺨치는 괴력으로 김민을 수레에 실어 나르는가 하면, 어떨 땐 남의 집 벽으로도 둔갑한다. 뱀파이어, 자객, 점쟁이 등등 김민에게 모르고 속고 알고도 속아 변신을 거듭한다.
“연기 욕심 없는 것이 배우로서 내 장점이자 단점”이라는 오달수도 “너무 유치한가, 과하지 않을까, 헷갈릴 때가 있었다”고 했다. “판단이 잘 안 서면 첫 번째 관객인 감독님한테 물었어요. 감독님이 ‘나만 믿어라’ 하면 오케이, 가는 거죠. 비현실적인 설정도 있지만, 나름대로 재밌고 감동적이지 않나요.”
변신의 귀재 서필에게 ‘기본값’은 있다. 오달수는 이렇게 말했다. “김민은 여자만 보면 쓰러지지만 서필은 굉장히 시크해요. 나쁜 남자 스타일이죠. 서필이 원래 거상이잖아요. 그렇게 되기까지 얼마나 많은 과거를 겪었겠어요. 어지간한 세상 물정은 대수롭지 않죠.”
현실에선 시크하기보다 수줍음 많고 한결같은 배우가 오달수다. “달수 형이 3편에서 잘생겨졌다”는 김명민의 말을 전하자, 오달수는 농담하듯 답했다. “호흡이 좋으니까, 그런 거짓말까지! 딱히 관리하는 건 없습니다. 이제 꺾어진 100살인데 얼굴에 변화가 생긴단 건 배우로서 좋은 징조죠. 하루, 한 달, 한 해 쌓여가는 무언가가 얼굴에서 드러난다면 좋죠. 고맙고요.”
