(“A woman wearing glasses”)

This is today’s Anchor Briefing.

“South Korean curling skip Kim Eun-jung is the reverse Superman of these Winter Games: Kim dons large, wire-framed glasses when she takes the ice, in the mirror image of Clark Kent returning to Earth, slapping on his spectacles and walking incognito into the front door of the Daily Planet.”

-USA Today-

And she earned her fame.

The sharp eyes that peeked out over her brown, wire-framed glasses were a hit with the public and the so-called “Kim Eun-jung glasses” sold out like hot cakes after curling became a hit during the Olympics.

But there were some who intuitively spotted what most people did not.

“They tacitly signal me to take off the glasses.”

One woman’s comment in which she admitted that she was discriminated against just because she wore glasses received countless likes and was reposted by many.

Many women shared their personal experiences after seeing this comment, saying it was difficult for women to get jobs if they wore glasses, or that they couldn’t even wear glasses if they had an eye infection, all due to the social pressure.

Come to think of it, we are living in a generation where just a few years ago the issue was that a female reporter appeared on screen wearing glasses.

“Freedom to wear glasses.”

Although she didn’t intend it, this was another hot topic raised to the surface thanks to Kim.

Exactly a month ago, on Jan. 26,

Prosecutor Seo Ji-hyeon, after years of hesitation, summoned up the courage to post her claims on the prosecution’s internal forum.

Four days after uploading her post, in this newsroom, she explained why she needed eight years to finally speak out, never expecting Me Too movement that would follow afterward.

“I suffered because of the remorse I felt. I wondered if I was responsible [for the sexual assault that was inflicted on me.]”

In just a month, the Me Too Movement is spreading like wildfire, and Kim is being showered with praise for her performance during the Olympics…. Has society’s awareness suddenly progressed this much, or is it at standstill?

The fear that prosecutor Seo felt over the eight years, and the fear that leaves majority of the women still shaking…

To some, it was merely “guidance,” “encouragement,” or even “customs.”

While the victims were driven to to the shadows with false rumors and conspiracies

[After occurrence of these movements,] I wonder if the traces of ill-gotten customs are far from being gone, to be preserved under the umbrella of authority and power, in which the victims struggled to reveal the truth whilst preparing to be crumbled or hurt in a society controlled by those at the top.

“Kim dons large, wire-framed glasses when she takes the ice.”

If Kim’s moments on the ice looked beautiful to us, then have we really progressed,

or are we still at a standstill?
