Ruling Democratic Party Rep. Kim Kyoung-soo, who is in hot water due to his connection with an organized online opinion manipulation scandal, declared his bid for the South Gyeongsang gubernatorial post in the upcoming local elections. At a press conference, he lambasted the accusations against him. He said he was open to any form of investigation, even from a special counsel if necessary, so that his name would be entirely cleared.

With so many different accounts and explanations, a thorough and speedy probe is needed. But the Blue House made it clear that it won’t agree to a special independent investigation as demanded by the opposition.

But based on circumstantial evidence, the scandal involving a blogger who went by the alias Druking could build up to challenge the legitimacy of 2017 presidential election if what he claims is true about his group conducting an organized online scheme to sway opinion in favor of Moon. Even if the group acted alone and voluntarily, the people concerned would have broken election and public duty laws. The question is how the scheme was organized. The group’s source of funding could hold the answer.

From the revelations so far, the relationship between the lawmaker and suspect does not seem negligible as claimed by the former campaign spokesman for Moon. Kim insists that the suspect had been among many supporters of the candidate. But the fact that he is an avid fan does not explain how he could bluntly threaten a key confidant of the president, make excessive demands and force a presidential secretary to meet with a figure he had recommended for a senior public post.

Photos and video clips showed the first lady had dropped by a group meeting led by the online activist close to the election day. The lawmaker is in the same photograph. This kind of high-profile event could not have been possible for only casual supporters. Apart from Kim, the suspect is believed to have been in contact with the Blue House and the ruling party.

Kim and the Blue House accuse the blogger of abusing his power. If they are the victims, why had they indulged in his illicit demands and threats? Kim should be honest. When asked if he would accept the formation of a special counsel investigation, he said it was up to the ruling party.

The police did not push ahead with the investigation, even upon discovering the connection to the lawmaker. Before the case demands special investigation, Kim should frankly speak on the allegations against him — exactly what his relationship with the suspect had been, what exactly his demands had been and what the two had discussed through the encrypted chat platform Telegram.

김경수 더불어민주당 의원이 어제 경남지사 출마를 선언했다. 오전 한때 출마 회견을 연기해 불출마설이 나돌았지만 그동안의 정면 돌파 입장을 유지했다. 그는 기자회견에서 자신에게 쏠린 의혹엔 "터무니없는 정치 공세"라고 일축한 뒤 "필요하면 특검을 포함한 어떤 조사에도 응하겠다"고 말했다. 그러면서 "야당과 언론에서 제기하는 모든 의혹에 대해 남김없이 조사하기 바란다"고 촉구했다.
지당한 말이다. 철저하고 신속한 수사가 불가피하다. 기자회견 때마다 해명이 달라 의심이 커지는 사건의 진상과 경위는 낱낱이 파헤쳐져야 한다. 문제는 청와대가 야권의 특검 요구에 응하지 않겠다는 뜻을 거듭 확인하고 있다는 점이다. 청와대는 "의문 제기 수준을 넘어 정부·여당에 흠집을 내거나 모욕을 주려는 것처럼 보인다"며 특검 요구를 외면했다.
민주당원인 김모씨(필명 드루킹) 일당의 댓글 조작 사건인 ‘드루킹 게이트’는 대선의 정당성 논란으로 이어질 수 있는 중대 사건이다. 설사 김씨 일당의 독자적 행위였다 해도 선거법 위반과 업무방해 혐의가 된다. 핵심은 지난 대선 당시 얼마나 조직적인 불법 여론 조작이 있었느냐는 건데 김씨의 사무실 운영 자금 등에 대한 출처가 나오면 사건 윤곽이 잡힐 것이다.
심각한 문제는 지금까지 드러난 정황만으로도 김 의원과 김씨의 관계가 예사롭게 보이지 않는다는 사실이다. 김 의원은 김씨가 수많은 문재인 대통령 지지자 중 한 사람이었을 뿐이라고 주장하고 있다. 하지만 단순한 자발적 지지자가 정권 핵심 인사에게 협박을 했다는 것도, 또 그런 청탁을 청와대에 전달했다는 것도, 청와대 실세 비서관이 추천 인사를 만났다는 것도 납득하기 어렵다.
게다가 문 대통령 부인 김정숙 여사가 지난해 대선 직전 김씨가 주도한 정치 모임을 찾아 격려한 사실도 드러났다. 그 자리엔 김 의원이 바로 옆에 있었다고 한다. 김 의원의 주장처럼 일방적인 지지자와의 의례적인 관계라면 연출되기 힘든 장면이다. 가뜩이나 김씨가 김 의원 외에도 현직 청와대 인사, 민주당 고위 관계자와 접촉했다는 의혹이 하루가 다르게 커지는 상황이다.
김 의원과 청와대는 "우리도 피해자고 우리가 당한 것"이라고 주장하고 있다. 온라인에서의 영향력을 무기로 한 김씨의 개인 일탈이란 것이다. 그렇다면 선거 브로커인 김씨가 정권 핵심 인사들을 협박하고, 실세들이 절절매는 식으로 행동하게 된 이유는 과연 무엇인가. 김 의원이 털어놓는 게 도리다. '필요하면 특검에 임하겠다'고 빙빙 돌아갈 일이 아니다. 더구나 "특검에 응하겠다"는 김 의원은 이날 '특검을 수용하느냐'는 말에 "당이 결정하는 대로 따르겠다"고 물러섰다.
지난달 25일 드루킹 등 3명을 구속하고도 지금까지 김 의원 등 핵심 관련자 수사엔 눈감았던 경찰이다. '경찰 수사팀을 수사하라'는 목소리가 여기저기서 터져 나오고 있다. 김 의원은 김씨와 도대체 어떤 관계였는지, 김씨의 요구 사항은 정확하게 무엇이었는지, 텔레그램을 통해선 무슨 내용을 주고받았는지를 문 대통령 최측근이란 김 의원이 스스로 공개하는 게 맞다.
