There stands a gaunt man with a tattooed calf.
After quickly scanning his tattoo, [my] prejudice disappeared.
Even though his tattoo did not appear in the news,
It serves the purpose of one specific individual.

광장 한편, 세월호 유족의 막사 앞
. In front of the Sewol ferry disaster memorial altar,

시인은 허깨비처럼 서 있던 남성의 종아리 위에 쓰인 날짜를 보았습니다.
A poet quickly scanned a date inscribed on the calf of a ghostlike man and inferred that this man was the father of a dead student.
그 날 태어난 아이는 그로부터 17년 뒤, 잔인했던 4월에…끝내 바다를 건너지 못했습니다.
Seventeen years later on a merciless day on April, that child was unable to be retrieved from the ocean.
결코 그날로 돌아갈 수 없었던 아비는 아들이 태어난 그 시간이라도 잊지 않고자 몸 안에 글자를 새겨 넣었을 것입니다.
The father, who couldn’t reverse time or change the past, engraved his [dead] son’s birthdate on his body.
그리고 2018년 3월의 어느 날.
On one fine day in March 2018
이른바 영재라 불리는 9살 주원이는 시간이란 무엇인가에 대해 알려주고 있었습니다. Nine year old Ju-won, known as a child prodigy, mentioned his views on time.
* child prodigy: 영재 어린이
아인슈타인의 상대성 이론을 공부해서 타임머신을 개발하고 싶다고 했던 아이. This gifted child stated that he wanted to invent a time machine by studying Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.
왜 시간여행을 하고 싶으냐는 질문에 대한 소년의 답변은 어른들을 놀라게 했습니다. Adults were surprised at Ju-won’s answer, when he was asked why he wanted to time-travel.
주원이가 돌아가고 싶은 시간은 2014년 4월 16일 세월호가 가라앉은 바로 그 날이었습니다. Ju-won wanted to return to April 16, 2014 – the very day that the Sewol Ferry sank.
과거로 돌아가서 세월호의 형, 누나들에게 그 배가 위험하니 타지 말라고 얘기해 주려고…

The time frame of four years
그 길이와 너비는 얼마만큼 일까.
Seemed to be vast and immeasurable

인정하기는 어렵지만 시간은 흐르고 삶은 계속되고 있기에 모두는 조금의 죄책감과 조금의 미안함을 품은 채 다시 오늘에 이르렀습니다.
Time has passed and life seems to be the same as usual, but everyone has come back today [April 16] with a bit of guilt and sorrow.
물론 평범한 일상이 모두 슬픔과 그리움일 수는 없을 것입니다.
Of course, everyday life cannot just be about sorrow and longing [for these dead children].
시간은 천천히 지나갈 것이고 사람들은 가끔씩 다시 그 날을 떠올리며 소스라칠 것입니다. Time will slowly pass, treating painful wounds. But, people
will still remember what happened and send their condolences when recalling April 16.

그 배에 사람이 타고 있었다는 사실을 기억하고 함께 안타까워했던 순간들을 잊지 않는다면…
If we don’t forget about this tragedy and if we keep cherishing our memories of those onboard the ferry, who were not able to return home

Sewol Ferry Incident was just an everyday traffic accident. It’s simply an accident that happened on the sea. A passenger ship accident.
적어도 우리는 단식 중인 세월호 가족들 앞에서 피자를 시켜놓고 폭식하는 행위에 투쟁이라는 이름을 붙였던 야만의 시대를 건너왔고, 국가가 거의 모든 책임을 방기한 것으로 보이는 참사에 그저 그것도 하나의 '교통사고'일 뿐이라고 외치는 잔인한 세월을 지나온 사람들이기에…
At least we openly criticized the members of Ilbe, who intentionally staged a pizza binge in front of the fasting family members of the Sewol tragedy, as barbarians. We have passed the period when some people simply dismissed this tragedy as an everyday “traffic accident” even though it is clear that the government ran away from its responsibility.

누군가 잊으라 해도…잊지 않을 것입니다.
Even if someone told us to forget about this incident, we will not forget about it.
