The ‘BTS Tour’ has fans traveling far and wide : Record-breaking boy band’s dedicated ARMY tracks down filming locations across Korea

The dedication of the passionate fan group has not only pushed BTS to the top of the charts all around the world, but has also boosted tourism to spots around the country that have not been used to seeing young K-pop fans walking by.
Since their debut, BTS has kept their music video filming locations a secret, but their fans have made it their mission to track down every iconic spot. With this information, many fans have been traveling to these areas and going on what has become known as the “BTS Tour.”
Filming locations like Iryeong Station in Yangju, Gyeonggi, are well known to the average fan, but other areas such as Buan County and Saemangeum in North Jeolla, Jumunjin Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon, are spots that only diehard ARMY members have made their way out to.

With just a few clues, the ARMY can trace where the BTS boys have been, from restaurants to the neighborhoods that appear in the background of their selfies. However, there was still one place that they had not been able to locate - the filming location of the group’s 2016 music video “Save Me.”
The one-take music video features a background of an open field and the sky, and nothing else. There are no artificial structures that provide any hints at the location. But during a behind-the-scenes video the group posted on Youtube, BTS member Suga makes the comment, “This is Buan, North Jeolla, right?” providing fans a small hint. Soon, the Buan County Office was filled with phone calls from BTS fans, informing them of their plans to rent a tour bus and go on a search for the site of the music video. However, the Buan County Office was not even aware that the group had made a visit.
To an outsider, the background may appear like a nondescript piece of land, but to a Buan local, the area is instantly recognizable. The filming site is reclaimed land in front of the Saemangeum Project Office in the Byeonsan neighborhood. The reason why fans had a difficult time locating the space was that the reclaimed land does not have an address. On the map, the area appears as if it is in the sea.
The reclaimed land of Saemangeum was created as the Saemangeum seawall, which connects Buan County to Gunsan, was being built. Construction began in 1991, and 29,100 hectares of land was created when the sea was filled with earth and sand. Soon the land went from a tidal field to a green meadow.
BTS made a visit to the area at least twice. In 2016, they filmed their music video with Gyehwa Island and Mount Seokbul behind them, and about a month ago, the boys shot their most recent album cover at a field next to the Saemangeum seawall.
In order to find the area, one must first search for “Saemangeum Project Office” on their car navigation system. Once at Saemangeum, drive in the direction of the Haechang Dock, and there is a path that leads to the reclaimed land. It is best to leave the car at the entrance of the path and walk in because it is an empty plain without a road. There are not any restrooms or convenience stores nearby, so be sure to come prepared. In 2023, the World Scout Jamboree will be held in the area and many facilities are expected to be built.

The 2017 music video for BTS’ “Spring Day,” could easily be considered a Korean tourism promotional video. The five-minute music video feels like a travel movie with the boys enjoying a train trip.
The video begins with a scene of a member, V, waiting for the train at a platform. The title of the song is “Spring Day,” but the video takes place in the winter. He walks into the middle of a snowy railway, where he leans down into the ground to listen to the whistle of the train. A rusty sign and a fading slate of the station’s roof quickly give away that the scene was shot at Iryeong Station in Yangju, Gyeonggi.
It takes about 40 minutes by car to get to Iryeong Station from Seoul City Hall. Iryeong Station is actually a closed platform that has not been used since 2004 and is only occasionally used for freight trains.
One might think this closed down train station would stay empty and deserted, but the station’s railway facilities administrator Kim Jong-un, says the station is frequently filled with tourists who look as if they have just arrived from Incheon Airport.
“It has become one of my duties to take pictures for tourists who forget to bring their tripods,” said Kim. Kim added, “Because the music video is set in the wintertime, we see a lot of tourists during the snowy season.”

The “Spring Day” video also features one spot that has become a fan favorite. In one scene, member Jimin walks along a beautiful sandy beach. The beach is the same one featured in a picture used in the album artwork of BTS’ album “You Never Walk Alone.” All seven members are sitting together at a bus station in front of the beach, enjoying the spring sun.
Fans jumped into action and were able to conclude that the group was at Jumunjin Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon. Kim Ju-hyun, an officer at the Jumunjin Town Office, explained that the picture was taken at a bus station just 400 meters (1,312 feet) away from the Jumunjin Beach parking lot.
The otherwise mundane bus stop at Jumunjin Beach suddenly gained popularity after appearing in the BTS music video.
Jumunjin has become used to having fans of the Korean Wave on its shores - the seawall at the beach is where one of the most iconic scenes from the smash-hit 2016 tvN drama “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God” was filmed.

Another location that BTS fans love to visit on their “BTS Tour” is the Mosan Airfield in Jecheon, North Chungcheong. The airfield was featured in BTS’ “Epilogue Young Forever” music video. In the video, the boys are seen walking down the landing strip of the airfield.
Mosan Airfield was built for the military in 1955. Although it was once used as the landing space for combat planes, it is now empty. The airfield is owned by the Ministry of National Defense, but unlike other military facilities, the area is not covered in barbed wire fences.
There aren’t any restrictions to enter, take photos or even fly a drone over this area. However, because it was a military facility, the location cannot be found on the map. It can only be found by typing in the “Uirimji-dong Community Service Center” as the destination. The airfield is in front of the community center.

외국 아니라 한국이었다 … 방탄소년단 뮤직비디오 촬영지
대세 아이돌 그룹 ‘방탄소년단’에는 ‘최초’라는 수식어가 따라다닌다. 한국 가수 최초로 빌보드 뮤직 어워드 ‘톱 소셜 아티스트’ 부문을 2년 연속(2017~2018) 수상하는가 하면, 지난달 27일에는 아시아 가수 최초로 정규 앨범 3집 ‘러브 유어 셀프 전 티어’를 빌보드 앨범차트 1위에 올려놓았다. 방탄소년단은 여러 번 “공식 팬클럽 ‘아미(ARMY)’ 덕분”이라고 밝힌 바 있다.
아미의 팬심은 상상을 초월한다. 방탄소년단 측은 뮤직비디오 촬영지를 원칙적으로 공개하지 않는다. 그러나 아미는 삽시간에 전국 방방곡곡의 촬영지를 찾아낸다. 그리고 소년들의 자취가 어린 장소를 찾아다니는 여행, 이른바 ‘방탄투어’를 즐긴다.
방탄투어 성지 순례에 week&도 동참했다. 경기도 양주의 간이역 ‘일영역’과 같이 팬들이 이미 발굴한 촬영지도 있지만, 전북 부안 새만금 간척지, 강원도 강릉 주문진해수욕장 등 week&이 ‘최초’ 공개하는 장소도 있다.
‘방탄’은 부안을 사랑했다
아미의 정보력은 혀를 내두를 정도다. 조그만 단서로 소년들이 다녀간 식당이나, 셀카를 찍은 장소를 추적해낸다. 하지만 아미도 끝끝내 짚어내지 못한 장소가 있다. 2016년 5월 공개된 뮤직비디오 ‘세이브 미’ 촬영지다.
원테이크 기법으로 촬영된 뮤직비디오의 배경은 하늘과 땅을 북 갈라놓은 너른 지평선인데, 주변에 위치를 파악할만한 인공 구조물이 일절 보이지 않는다. 메이킹 필름에서 방탄소년단 멤버(슈가)가 “여기 전북 부안이지?”라는 말로 촬영지에 대한 힌트를 슬쩍 흘렸다. 이후 부안군청에는 “관광버스를 대절해 촬영지를 찾아가고 싶다”는 팬들의 문의가 쏟아졌다. 그러나 부안군청도 방탄소년단이 다녀간 사실을 알지 못했다.
외지인의 눈에는 공터처럼 보일 뿐이지만, 부안 토박이는 뮤직비디오를 보고 단박에 촬영지를 파악했다. 촬영 장소는 부안군 변산면 대항리 새만금홍보관 앞 간척지였다. 직접 방문해보니 부안군청도, 팬들도 촬영 장소를 특정하기 어려웠던 이유를 짐작할 수 있었다. 간척지는 아직 ‘주소’조차 얻지 못한 땅이다. 스마트폰으로 지도 앱을 구동해도 바다 위에 동동 떠 있는 것처럼 표시될 뿐이다.
새만금 간척지는 전북 부안과 군산을 잇는 세계 최장(33.9㎞) 새만금방조제를 건설하면서 탄생했다. 1991년 물막이 공사가 시작됐고 면적 2만9100㏊에 달하는 바다가 토사로 메워졌다. 백합과 바지락을 주워 담던 갯벌은 널찍한 초지로 변했다.
방탄소년단은 인적이 드문 간척지를 최소 두 차례 방문했다. 2016년에는 계화도와 석불산(289m)을 뒤에 두고 뮤직비디오를 촬영했고, 달포 전에는 새만금방조제 옆 벌판에서 올해 출시된 새 앨범 사진을 찍었다. 두 포인트의 거리는 200m 정도다.
새만금 간척지를 찾아가려면 우선 내비게이션에 ‘새만금홍보관’을 목적지로 설정해야 한다. 새만금홍보관 앞 회전교차로에서 해창선착장 방향으로 가면 간척지 진입로가 나온다. 진입로 초입에 차를 대고 걸어가는 게 낫다. 도로도 없는 허허벌판이어서이다. 입장료를 받는 관리자도 없고, 화장실이나 매점도 없다. 2023년 새만금 간척지에서 야영 대회 ‘세계잼버리대회’가 열린다고 하니, 주변에 여행자를 위한 시설이 하나둘 들어설 것으로 보인다.
간이역에 동남아 여행객이 몰리는 이유
2017년 2월 공개된 방탄소년단의 ‘봄날’ 뮤직비디오는 ‘관광 한국’을 홍보하는 콘텐트로 삼아도 손색없을 정도다. 약 5분 분량의 뮤직비디오는 기차여행을 즐기는 소년들의 풋풋한 로드무비를 관람하는 기분이 든다.
뮤직비디오는 방탄소년단 멤버 ‘뷔’가 플랫폼에서 기차를 기다리는 장면으로 시작한다. 노래 제목은 봄날이지만 배경은 겨울이다. 눈이 소복하게 쌓인 철길로 폴짝 뛰어 내려 레일에 귀를 대고 기적 소리를 듣는다. 이 장면은 경기도 양주의 간이역 ‘일영역’에서 촬영했다. 녹슨 간판, 바랜 슬레이트 지붕 등 시간이 멈춘 듯한 역사 풍경이 화면을 채운다.
서울시청에서 일영역까지는 차로 40분 거리다. 삼상리에 도착해 마을 샛길을 파고 들면 느닷없이 낡은 기차역이 모습을 드러낸다. 일영역은 2004년 여객열차 운행이 완전히 종료됐다. 현재는 간간이 화물열차만 다닌다.
기약 없는 기차를 기다리는 간이역이라기에 분위기가 쓸쓸할 줄만 알았는데, 일영역 시설관리자 김종운씨는 의외의 얘기를 들려줬다. 인천공항에서 막 도착한 듯 여행 트렁크를 끌고 등장하는 동남아 여행자들로 역사에 생기가 돈단다. 김씨는 “삼각대를 준비하지 못한 동남아 여행객의 사진을 찍어주는 게 중요 업무가 돼 버렸다”며 웃었다. “뮤직비디오의 배경이 겨울이어서 함박눈이 내리면 외려 방문객이 늘어난다”라고도 덧붙였다.
코레일 측은 을씨년스러웠던 일영역이 새로운 한류 여행지가 된 점은 반가워하면서도 관람에 주의를 당부했다. 특히 뮤직비디오 장면처럼 레일에 얼굴을 댔다가 한여름에는 화상을 입기 쉽고, 한겨울에는 상처를 입을 수도 있단다. 개별 여행은 상관없지만 사진 동호회의 단체 방문이나 쇼핑몰 촬영 같은 상업 목적의 방문은 코레일의 허가를 받아야 한다.
개장 임박한 방탄 정류장
다시 ‘봄날’ 얘기다. 뮤직비디오에는 인상적인 풍경이 가득 담겼다. 방탄소년단 멤버 ‘지민’이 너른 바다를 곁에 두고 자유로이 백사장을 거닐었던 장면도 팬들의 눈을 사로잡았다. 봄날을 타이틀곡으로 삼은 앨범 ‘유 네버 워크 얼론’ 앨범 사진에도 동일한 바다가 등장한다. 바닷가 버스정류장에 일곱 소년이 쪼르륵 앉아 봄볕을 쬐고 있다.
팬들은 촬영지를 추적하면서 탁 트인 수평선을 자랑하는 바다는 동해 바다이고, 동해에서도 강원도 강릉 주문진해수욕장이라는 데까지 범위를 좁혔다. 방탄소년단의 촬영을 지켜봤던 주문진읍사무소 김주현 주무관이 장소를 특정해줬다. 영상 촬영지는 주문진읍 향호리에 있는 주문진해수욕장이고, 사진 촬영지는 향호리 8-54번지다. 주문진해수욕장 주차장에서 400m 떨어진 길에 정류장을 설치했고, 촬영 후 구조물을 철거했단다.
재미있는 점은 방탄소년단의 버스정류장이 주문진해수욕장에 별안간 등장할지도 모를 일이라는 것이다. 강릉시청은 드라마 ‘도깨비’ 촬영지로 알려지면서 전국 명소로 거듭난 주문진 방사제의 사례를 기억한다. 취재를 시작하자마자 강릉시는 향호리에 방탄소년단의 버스정류장을 재현하겠다는 계획을 세웠다.
또 다른 방탄투어 성지 순례지로 충북 제천시 고암동의 모산비행장이 있다. ‘에필로그 영 포에버’ 뮤직비디오에 등장하는 포장도로의 정체는 비행기가 뜨고 내렸던 활주로다. ‘넘어져 다치고 아파도 끝없이 달리네’라는 노래 가사처럼 멤버들은 거침없이 활주로를 누비고 활보한다.
모산비행장은 1955년 군사 목적으로 건설했다. 한동안 전투기가 뜨고 내렸겠지만, 지금은 관제탑도 온데간데없이 4만1000㎡에 이르는 활주로 부지가 방치돼 있다. 모산비행장은 국방부 소유인데, 여느 군사시설과 달리 주변에 철조망이나 ‘출입금지’ 푯말이 없다.
외지인에게는 마을 한가운데의 널찍한 활주로가 생경한 광경으로 다가오지만, 활주로를 빈번하게 드나드는 마을 주민은 무엇이 특별하냐고 반문한다. 출입도, 사진 촬영도, 심지어 드론을 띄우는 것도 딱히 제지가 없다. 다만 군사시설이라 모산비행장이라고 검색해도 지도에 표시되지 않는다. 내비게이션에 ‘의림지동주민센터’를 목적지로 찍으면 된다. 주민센터 코앞이 비행장이다.
