Choi Jung-in gets back in the studio: The R&B star is working on new album after performing in Pyongyang

The R&B singer, known for hit tracks such as “Rainy Season” (2011) and “Your Scent” (2014), had not performed for a while before the concert in North Korea. “After releasing an album in January 2016, I had a long hiatus because I was focusing on childcare,” said Choi.
Her long break from performing made the show - already fraught with diplomatic tensions at a time when relations between the North and South were still very steady - especially difficult for Choi. “I was so scared to get on stage because it’s been so long and I was afraid I might ruin it. I used to be able to sing without any thought, but now it’s hard to make the switch from a mother to a singer,” said Choi.
The R&B singer married musician Cho Jung-chi in Novermber 2013 after 11 years of dating, and their first child was born in February last year. The celebrity couple’s relationship has often been in public eye - they appeared on season four of MBC’s reality show “We Got Married” (2013), allowing audiences a peek into their everyday lives.
Choi credits her song “Uphill Road” (2012), written by Yoon Jong-shin, as earning her spot in the Pyongyang lineup. The song tells the story of two people walking hand-in-hand down a challenging road, an apt metaphor for the situation the two Koreas face.
Choi sat down for an interview with the Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to discuss her experience performing in Pyongyang, caring for her baby and her upcoming album. The following are edited excerpts.
Q. How do you feel about the performance in Pyongyang?
A. I still can’t believe it. I was reminded again when I took out some of the souvenirs I bought in Pyongyang. If there’s one thing I regret, it’s the food I wasn’t able to eat at the last after-party. The conference room was so big that the food was separated into hot and cold sections, and I wasn’t able to try any of the hot dishes.
Your performance was the opening act. Were you nervous at all?
I was glad to see my name at the top of the cue sheet. There was pressure, but I thought it would be better to get it done fast, because the longer you wait, the more nervous you become.
Do you think collaborations between South and North Korean artists will be possible?
I think it will be fun to do that if unification happens. I think I’ve done quite a lot of collaborations over the years. My voice even goes well with genres such as rock and EDM. I will definitely consider doing collaborations with anyone who has good music.
Your husband must have been busy taking care of the baby while you were gone.
I’m sure it was hard because we’ve been taking care of the baby together. But my mother-in-law came and helped a lot because my husband is also busy studying music engineering at university.
How would you react if your daughter told you she wants to be a singer?
I actually thought I wouldn’t want her to. I felt that people would have some kind of bias or prejudice because of her parents both being musicians. But then again, I feel like people won’t really care, and it will be nice to work in the same field since I love music.
Does she have any musical talent?
We showed her a piano, and we think she will be talented at it because she knew how to shape her fingers correctly. And when she skillfully plucked out the strings on the Ukulele, we said, “She is obviously a guitarist’s daughter,” but later we saw that kids her age from other families were also great at plucking out strings and playing the piano.
In March, our daughter held a gavel at her doljanchi, [Korean celebration of a child’s first birthday]. Becoming a judge and a famous singer are both hard options, so I will support her to do whatever she does best without interfering.
Do you have any songs that tell stories about childcare in the new album?
I won’t have any songs directly related to childcare, but I think there will be tracks inspired by my daily life.
You know, sometimes, even when you’re having a happy day with your husband and child, there are moments when you get tired and bicker. That was when I wrote a lot of my lyrics. If someone read my memos, they might think I was the unhappiest person in the world. With happy moments, I enjoy them and they pass by, but with the hard times, I write them down as lyrics, so I can understand there might be misunderstandings. I let my emotions out through writing.
Do you care about getting a No. 1 hit?
I don’t really care about it, but I want to hit No. 1 someday. But this is the wrong way to think about it. I don’t care too much about the chart, but I still respect it. I used to exclude mainstream music, but as I performed at events, I realized the importance of music that is loved by the public.
I think the tracks on the music charts aren’t the only songs with value. In the case of my songs, they tend to start from outside the list of top tracks and gradually work their way up to the top. “Uphill Road” did that too. I want to continue to make music that will be loved for a long time.

정인 ”음원차트 욕심? 1위는 해보고 싶어”
남북관계에 꽃이 피면서 가수 정인도 덩달아 바빠졌다. 지난 4월 평양에서 열린 '남북 평화 협력 기원 남측 예술단' 무대에 올라 '오르막길'을 열창한 이후 여기저기서 러브콜을 받는 중이다. MBC '라디오스타' KBS2 '슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다' 등 출연은 물론, 인터뷰 중간에도 그를 찾는 전화에 이메일을 열어야만 했다.
지난 14일 JTBC '뉴스룸' '앵커브리핑' 코너에서는 정인의 '오르막길'이 울려퍼졌다. 손석희 앵커는 "결국 오르고야 말 아득한 저 끝을 노래하고 있다. '그 때 까지는 꼭 서로 손을 놓치더라도 걱정하지말자. 결국 우리는 다시 만난다'는 가사 하나만으로 우리 예술단의 평양공연 첫 자리에 놓일만한 자격이 있는 노래였다"고 노래를 소개했다.
정인은 처음 '오르막길'을 받아들었을 때만해도 정치와 연관될 줄은 전혀 상상하지도 못했다고 웃었다. 그러면서 요즘엔 자신이 새로운 오르막길을 걷는 듯한 기분이 든다고 고백했다. "한동안 아내이자 엄마로 일상을 보내다가 오랜만에 무대에 올랐는데 적응이 안 되더라고요. '나는 누구지, 지금은 여기 어디일까' 이런 느낌이 들면서 무대를 망칠 것 같은 두려움이 엄습했어요. 처음 느낀 감정이에요."
정인은 이 두려움을 몸으로 깨기로 했다. 더 많은 무대에 올라보고, 처음 연기에도 도전하면서 자신의 한계를 넓혀가고 있다. "올해 안에 새 앨범도 낼 거예요. 빠르면 여름이 될 수도 있고요"라며 활동에 기대를 당부했다.
-평양의 여운이 길죠.
"아직도 믿기지 않아요. 평양에서 사온 기념품들 꺼내면서 또 한 번 실감했어요. 아쉬운 게 있다면 마지막 뒤풀이 자리에서 먹지 못하고 온 음식들이요. 회견장이 넓어서 온냉코너가 나뉘어 있었는데 저는 온음식은 맛도 못보고 왔어요."
-공연 오프닝을 장식했는데 떨리지 않았나요.
"제 이름이 큐시트 처음에 써 있어서 좋았어요. 부담감도 있지만 오래 기다릴수록 긴장되니까 차라리 빨리 하고 끝내는 게 좋겠더라고요.
-평양에서 정인 씨를 부른 이유는 뭘까요.
"윤종신 선배님이 쓴 '오르막길' 덕분인 것 같아요. 제 짐작이지만, 그 누구도 섭외 이유를 말해주진 않았고 저도 물어보진 않았으니까요.
-컬래버레이션이 가능하겠어요.
"통일이 된다면 재미있을 것 같아요. 저는 그동안 협업을 많이 해온 편인 것 같아요. 제 목소리가 은근히 록이나 EDM 장르에도 잘 묻어가요. 누구나 좋은 노래가 있다면 협업을 고민해 볼래요."
-출장 기간에 남편 조정치 씨가 육아로 바빴겠어요.
"둘이 같이 보다가 아무래도 혼자 보려니 힘들었겠죠. 그래도 어머니가 올라오셔서 많이 도와주셨어요. 남편이 또 대학교에서 음악 엔지니어 공부 중이라 바쁘거든요."
-만약 딸이 가수를 한다면 어떨까요.
"안 그랬으면 좋겠다는 마음이 컸어요. 부부가 뮤지션이라서 편견이나 선입견이 있을 것 같았거든요. 그런데 딱히 사람들이 신경 안 쓸 것 같기도 하고, 제가 음악을 좋아하니까 같은 일 하면 좋을 수도 있겠다 싶고요."
-음악에 소질이 있나요.
"피아노를 보여줬는데 피아노 치는 손 모양을 하고 있어서 소질이 있는 줄 알았어요. 우쿨렐레도 엄청 잘 뜯어서 '역시 기타리스트 딸이라 달라'라고 했는데 다른 집 비슷한 나이의 아이도 잘 뜯고 피아노도 다 치더라고요. 지난 3월에 돌잔치에서는 판사봉을 잡았어요. 판사 되는 것도 힘들고, 유명한 가수 되는 것도 어려운 일이니까 잘 하는 게 있다면 관여하지 않고 응원해 주려고 해요."
-신곡 준비도 하고 있나요.
"앨범을 준비하고 있어요. 2016년 1월에 앨범을 내고 육아에 집중하면서 공백기가 길어졌거든요. 1년 동안은 누구 도움 없이 둘이서 아이를 돌보자고 해서 일을 줄였어요. 그러다보니 이제 가수로 돌아오는 법을 잊었나봐요. 무대에 오랜 만에 섰는데 망칠 것 같다는 두려움이 생겼어요. 원래는 아무생각없이 노래 잘 하고 그랬는데, 요즘엔 엄마일 때랑 가수일 때랑 스위치 전환이 빠르게 되지 않아요."
-새 앨범엔 육아 이야기도 있을까요.
"직접적으로 육아에 대한 주제를 풀진 않겠지만 일상에서 영감을 받은 곡은 있을 것 같아요. 남편, 아이와 함께 행복한 나날을 보내다가도 지치고 다투고 하는 순간이 있잖아요. 그럴 때 저는 가사를 많이 썼어요. 제가 쓴 메모를 누가 본다면 세상 불행한 여자로 여길지도 몰라요. 행복한 순간은 그 자체를 즐기고 웃어 넘기는데 힘들 때는 가사를 쓰니까 오해할 수 있죠. 저는 글로 감정을 푸는 스타일이라 더욱 그래요."
-음원 차트도 신경쓰시나요.
"딱히 신경을 쓰진 않는데 1위는 해보고 싶어요. 제 생각이 잘못된 거죠. 신경을 써야 1위를 할텐데, 정신 차려야 할 것 같아요. 차트를 신경쓰지 않지만 존중하는 마음이 있어요. 옛날에 저는 주류를 배척했는데 요즘 들어 행사도 다니고 하면서 대중들이 공감하는 음악이 중요하다는 걸 알았어요. 그렇다고 차트 안에 있는 음악만이 가치 있는 건 아니니까요. 제 노래는 오히려 차트 밖에 있다가 서서히 치고 올라오는 경우가 많아요. '오르막길'도 그렇고요. 오래 공감할 수 있는 음악을 계속 하고 싶어요."
