In celebration of the 70th anniversary of its establishment, the Republic of Korea Army will stage the musical “Shinheung Military Academy,” at the National Museum of Korea’s Theater ‘Yong’ in central Seoul, from Sept. 9 to 23.

The musical tells the stories of the patriotic young people who fought and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of Korea during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). The production will star celebrities who are currently active duty soldiers such as actors Ji Chang-wook and Kang Ha-neul as well as singer Kim Sung-kyu of the boy band Infinite.

Ji will play Dong-kyu, a distinguished student at the academy and son of an anti-Japanese Confucian scholar, who fights for the freedom of his nation. Meanwhile, Kang plays an orphan who grows up to be a freedom fighter, and Kim will play General Ji Cheong-cheon, who graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy and later led the Korean guerilla forces against the Japanese.

The musical is being produced by renowned production company Shownote, which is well known for their production of musicals such as “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Lieutenant colonel Yang Won-do, who is planning the upcoming musical, said, “‘Shinheung Military Academy,’ which is the [beginning] root of the nation’s armed forces, is also a fitting theme for the 100th Anniversary of the March 1 independence movement next year.” He added, “We will produce a high quality performance and we plan on staging this musical in Shanghai, China as well.”

The first military musical, produced by the Ministry of National Defense and the Republic of Korea Army, was “Mine,” which premiered in 2008. The musical is based on the true story of Lieutenant Colonel Lee Jong-myeong, a man who lost both of his legs after a mine explosion near the demilitarized zone in 2000. The story follows the conflict and reconciliation of a military father and son who do not see eye-to-eye. The musical was produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean armed forces, and singers Kangta and Yang Dong-geun, who were both serving in the military at the time, were cast as the main characters.

After “Mine,” the military produced two other military musicals. “Life Voyage” was produced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War on June 25, 2010 and “The Promise” was staged in 2013 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the ceasefire of the Korean War. Both musicals also starred celebrities serving in the military at the time, including Lee Joon-gi and Ju Ji-hoon in “Life Voyage,” and Ji Hyun-woo and Kim Moo-yul in “The Promise.”

For some of these actors, including Kangta and Yang, participating in the military musicals served as an opportunity to enter the musical industry.

“Until now, military musicals were seemingly out-dated,” said Won Jong-won, a professor of mass communications at Soonchunhyang University.

“If we break out of the box of trying to educate, and create novel projects, [the military musicals] will be able to gain greater attention, even in the musical market,” he added.
