Tons of tangerines flown to North

The Blue House has sent hundreds of tons of tangerines to Pyongyang as a special gift in return for the mushrooms that the North sent to Seoul in September.

청와대는 감귤 수백톤을 평양에 특별선물로 보냈다. 9월에 북한이 남한에 선물로 보낸 버섯에 대한 답례이다.
“At 8 a.m. our military cargo plane left Jeju Airport for Pyongyang Sunan Airport carrying Jeju tangerines,” said Kim Eui-kyeom, a Blue House spokesperson, in a brief text message to reporters. A total of 200 tons of tangerines were to be flown to the North over two days packed in 20,000 boxes, each weighing 10 kilograms (22 pounds).

김의겸 청와대 대변인은 기자들에게 “감귤을 실은 우리 군수송기가 오전 8시 제주공항에서 이륙해서 평양순안공항으로 날아갔다”는 짧은 문자메세지를 기자들에게 보냈다. 10킬로그램 들이 상자 2만개 감귤 총 2백 톤을 이틀 동안 북한으로 수송한다.
“200 tons of tangerines will be transported in four trips over today and tomorrow,” Kim said, adding that for each trip a group of four C-130 aircrafts would be mobilized. Vice Unification Minister Chun Hae-sung and Suh Ho, presidential secretary for unification policy, also traveled with the tangerines.

김 대변인은 “오늘과 내일 네 차례 나눠 감귤 2백 톤을 수송한다”고 말했다. 한 차례 수송에 C-130 수송기 4대를 동원한다고 덧붙였다. 천해성 통일부 차관과 서호 청와대 통일정책 비서관도 감귤과 함께 방북했다.
The cargo plane returned from its first trip to Pyongyang at 1 p.m. After re-loading, it left Jeju at 3 p.m. and returned again around 8 p.m. on Sunday night. Another two trips will be conducted at the same time on Monday to complete the delivery of all 200 tons of tangerines.

수송기는 오후 1시에 평양에서 제주공항으로 돌아왔다. 다시 감귤 상자들을 싣고 오후 3시에 제주공항을 떠났고 일요일 밤 8시쯤 다시 돌아왔다. 월요일 같은 시각에 두 차례 수송을 해서 감귤 2백 톤을 모두 배달한다.
“We have selected tangerines as gifts considering that it is a rather difficult fruit to obtain for North Korean residents,” said the spokesperson, adding that such a large amount was sent in the hope that more North Koreans would be able to enjoy them.
김 대변인은 “북한 주민들이 구하기 어려운 과일임을 고려해 감귤을 선물로 골랐다”고 말했다. 더 많은 북한 주민들이 감귤을 맛볼 수 있게 되기를 바라는 마음에서 그렇게 많은 양을 보냈다고 덧붙여 말했다.
The Blue House’s surprise gift of tangerines comes nearly two months after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un gave South Korean President Moon Jae-in two tons of pine mushrooms on the occasion of the third Moon-Kim summit held in the North Korean capital in September.

9월 평양에서 3차 남북 정상회담이 열렸을 때 북한 김정은 위원장이 남한 문재인 대통령에게 송이버섯 2톤을 선물로 보냈다. 거의 두 달이 지나서 청와대가 깜짝 선물로 감귤을 보냈다.
