Archives become gold for local TV networks: As livestreams of old shows become even more popular, channels are getting creative

With their archives, local broadcasters create new shows using old clips or stream their old content on YouTube channels and attract viewers who grew up watching TV shows in the 1980s and 90s. Local broadcasters are busy dusting off some of their old videotapes from the 1980s and 90s these days. The old videotapes, stored away deep in the archives, are becoming a treasure trove for Korea’s top TV stations.

Using their old videotapes, the terrestrial broadcasters livestream their old content on YouTube, allowing viewers to reminisce about the good old days. Some networks have created new shows using only footage from the archive.

During a recent livestream, KBS’s “Again Gayo Top 10” channel aired a year-end music festival held by the broadcaster 10 years ago. Viewers watched the music festival and left real-time comments as if they were watching the show live. One of the comments read, “I can’t believe this was aired 10 years ago.”

The “Again Gayo Top 10” channel mostly streams weekly music shows from the 80s and 90s, but it recently began to stream some annual music events as the year-end festival season is nearing.

Major broadcasters hold celebratory events to wrap up the year and give awards to those who performed well throughout the year every December.

The KBS YouTube channel is run by the channel’s content archive department. The main responsibility of the team is digitalizing all of its old TV shows.

Looking at the transformed digital files piling up, somebody at the department suggested creating a digital service using the files. That was the beginning of the YouTube channel journey for KBS.

“I grew up watching the ‘Gayo Top 10,’ so all the old video clips brought me back to the old days,” said Kim Seong-ah, who is part of the content archive department at KBS.

“When the channel first launched last October, we uploaded music as individual short clips, but we began to livestream entire episodes of the music show starting last month because the feedback was really good,” she added.

The weekly music shows of the 80s and 90s are very different from the programs that air today. The hosts of the shows make awkward jokes, and when one singer’s performance is over, the show quickly changes to the next. But the music of the time is good enough to make people in their 20s, 30s and 40s revisit their younger days. The channel currently has 104,000 subscribers.

A similar channel, “SBS Kpop Classic” run by SBS, has 182,000 subscribers.

MBC’s YouTube channel boasts the highest number of subscribers, with 6.3 million, as it also airs popular drama series and TV shows of the past.

Before 2010, once TV shows aired, they were recorded onto analog tapes and transferred to archives. As soon as the tapes were placed in a corner of the archives, they were completely forgotten unless the tapes were used for flashback scenes. The tapes stay there accumulating dust all over them.

But the entire broadcast community switched to digital starting in 2010, and the major networks began to take their analog tapes and covert them into digital files.

At KBS, about 600,000 old tapes were on the conversion list. The tapes include final edited versions as well as original footage and other additional clips.

“We converted 99 percent of the TV shows into digital, and we’re gradually converting others, too,” said Hong Jeong-min, the leader of KBS’s content archive department.

Apart from streaming the old files on YouTube, some networks have even created new shows using the converted digital files.

One of them is “KBS Docu Insight: Archive Project Modern Korea,” which came out in November.

The documentary series were made to look back on Korea’s modern history.

The documentary tells stories of specific moments in time weaving together relevant video clips from news broadcasts, dramas, shows and other documentaries.

One of the episodes tracks down the history of the College Scholastic Ability Test.

Others are themed around Haitai Tigers, a former professional baseball team, and the Sampoong Department Store, which collapsed in 1995, causing nearly a thousand casualties.

Three episodes have been uploaded already, and another three will hit KBS1 in February.

Lee Tae-woong, the producer of the “Modern Korea” series, said, “I came to rediscover the potential of archives while I was filming a documentary about the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul.”

While he was preparing for the documentary titled “88/18,” Lee came across a lot of unedited scenes that were not included for final versions of shows.

In “88/18,” which was produced to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1988 Olympics, rare scenes such as the former President Chun Doo Hwan making a blooper during a speech and Im Jong-seok, then a college student but now President Moon Jae-in’s former chief of staff, doing an interview with a TV reporter but later running away from the venue to avoid the police could hit the air three decades later through the documentary.

In order not to miss those raw, yet fresh moments from the past, Lee and his team reviewed about 10 years worth of video and sorted them into various themes.

Two films released this year, “Maria by Callas: In Her Own Words” and “Amazing Grace,” are good examples of showing how archives could be used.

“Maria by Callas: In Her Own Words,” released in July, spotlights the life of Maria Callas, the famed soprano, by showing hidden sides of the musician through video clips, all gathered from archives.

“Amazing Grace” is a documentary about acclaimed soul singer Aretha Franklin. The documentary is made using a previously unreleased 1972 concert of hers.

Broadcasting companies overseas are also increasingly in the business of capitalizing on their vast archives, including the BBC, which see their archives as valuable assets.

“The archives of many broadcasters have been neglected for a long time, but that is beginning to change in recent years,” said Oh Jeong-ho, the producer and the team head at the EBS content planning center.

Oh added, “If local broadcasters want to stand against the new surge of [media] platforms, it is time for them to develop stories based on their archives.”
