‘Parasite’ tops Watcha’s movie list

Video streaming platform Watcha announced on Tuesday that director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” and drama series “Chernobyl” each topped their respective categories based on reviews from users.

Acclaimed Palme d’Or winner “Parasite” received a rating of 4.3 out of five in the film category, and the drama “Chernobyl,” which tells the story of the tragic nuclear accident that occurred at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, received a 4.7 out of five.

In the film category, Disney movies took up one-third of the top 15 rankings, including “Avengers: Endgame,” which came in second place, and other movies like “Toy Story 4,” “Aladdin,” “Frozen 2” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Female-led local films also landed on the top chart, such as LGBTQ film “Moonlit Winter” featuring Kim Hee-ae, “Kim Ji-young, Born 1982” and “A Resistance.”

Seven American drama series including “Chernobyl” ranked in the top 15 of the drama category, such as the second season of “Big Little Lies,” the third season of “Stranger Things” and “Sex Education.”

Local dramas that made the year-end chart include “Melodramatic,” “When The Camellia Blooms” and “The Light in Your Eyes.”

The platform noted that female-led drama series and films had a successful year overall in 2019.

The rankings were compiled using data from the platform of films with more than 10,000 reviews and dramas with more than 8,000 reviews.
