Kim Myung-gon, the former culture minister who played Yu-bong in the 1993 hit art house film “Seopyonje” is back and has been keeping himself busy on stage.

Most recently, the 68-year-old actor, director and scriptwriter appeared in the theatrical performance “Black and White Tea Room — Counsellor” last month.

After wrapping up the play, Kim joined the changgeuk “Chunhyang” as a director and scriptwriter.

The traditional Korean opera, or changguek, will begin on May 14 at the National Theater of Korea to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the theater.
JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, caught up with Kim to talk about his ongoing project during a recent rehearsal of “Chunhyang.”

The opera is based on “Chunhyangjeon” or “The Tale of Chunhyang.” It is a love story between a man and a woman from different classes of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Kim is nearing his 70th birthday, but he is still full of energy and has a lot of things on his to-do list.

“I haven’t realized my dream to leave a masterpiece of my own. I have a long way to go,” said Kim. Back in college, Kim happened to join a drama club and came across pansori (traditional narrative singing) for the first time. Kim learned the traditional singing techniques from pansori master Park Cho-wol (1917-1983) for 10 years, and pansori has become an important axis of his acting career.

But people used to call him “insane” for pursuing pansori after graduating from Seoul National University and Jeonju High School, two prestigious academic institutions.

He didn't listen to their objections, and formed a theater troupe called Arirang in 1986. He was happy to become a starving artist. Little did he know that pansori would bring him fame and fortune years later.

Kim made a name for himself with the film “Seopyonje,” for which he wrote the script and starred in as the protagonist named Yu-bong. Yu-bong deliberately blinds his daughter to force her to stay focused on pansori.

Upon its release, the film became the first Korean film to attract over 1 million people to theaters.

It premiered at a time when there were no multiplex movie theaters in the country. “Seopyonje” was released at a theater called Dansungsa that showed the film on a single screen.

But the spotlight didn’t change his life that much. Whether he became famous or not, Kim said he was just a clown. "I don’t want people to define me as an actor, writer and director. I just want to express myself freely regardless of those titles.”

The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

You’re collaborating with the National Theater of Korea for the first time in 20 years with "Chunhyang." But the story has been retold multiple times. How is it different from other versions of stories?

I believe “Chunhyangjeon” is the best among all the remaining pieces of pansori. I think it is a well-composed piece that is even better than the works of Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. I tried to keep the traditional melodies sung by hundreds of masters in the past, but changed all the lyrics into hangul. I also changed all the characters created during ancient times into modern ones so that audiences in their 20s and 30s could relate to the story.

If you have to choose the best lines of your life, what would they be?

It’s from “Seopyonje.” There is this line that goes, “If you can reach the peak when it comes to singing pansori, it’s much better than being famous or being rich.” It is my philosophy. An artist can’t achieve anything without being completely immersed in his chosen field. Even if you can’t earn money and people don’t recognize you, if you go crazy in your own world and continue your work, you will someday find happiness in it as an artist.

You were a struggling artist for a time, but then you earned fame and fortune with “Seopyonje,” right?

I never imagined I could earn those things with “Seopyonje” when I wrote the script. I wasn’t thinking about fame, popularity or money when I was doing theatrical performances or studying pansori. I just did my thing and was able to achieve those things in return for hard work. But fame and money didn’t affect my life. They helped me out a little, but I was still the same poor actor [even after the success of 'Seopyonje.']

What has influenced your life the most?

It’s a dream for my work. Since I was young, I dreamed of leaving a masterpiece behind me just like the ones written by Shakespeare or Goethe. I haven’t made the dream come true yet, so the dream always lingers in me. Like Goethe’s “Faust,” I want my piece to contain my whole life and for it to inspire mankind.

Is there a reason for you to put the value of life in art?

I feel alive when I’m doing theater. It’s my happy place. After graduating from college, I worked as a reporter for a magazine for one year and taught German for two years at a school. I realized I couldn’t stand a moment without theater. I came down with depression and a stomach disorder [while pursuing other jobs.] Whether I can make a living or not, I thought that I should live by doing plays. I didn’t really care about whether others recognized me or not.

You served as the head of the National Theater of Korea between 2000 and 2005 and the culture minister between 2006 and 2007. What was it like to work in the public sector as an actor?

They were valuable experiences but I had to refrain myself from doing creative work. Now I want to make up for the time that I lost as a creator — I have a list of things to do. If chances are given to me, I want to keep acting, but actors can’t ask for roles. We should be needed by someone else. If no chances are given to me, I want to create those chances for myself as a scriptwriter and a director.

How do you spend your day when you’re away from work?

I try to live like a stoic and work out whenever I can. I have to act on camera and stand on stage, but if I lose my health, my life as an actor is over. Keeping in shape is an essential part of my career.
