President Moon Jae-in congratulated the Korea JoongAng Daily on its 20th anniversary.

“As Korea’s first global-local newspaper, the Korea JoongAng Daily has published high-quality editions in English for the past 20 years,” Moon wrote in a letter dated Wednesday. “In this regard, I extend my gratitude and respect to its reporters and staff.”

Moon noted that the newspaper has fulfilled its mission to report accurate news on Korea to English-speaking readers at home and abroad since its start in 2000.

The Korea JoongAng Daily printed its first edition on Oct. 17, 2000, in partnership with the International Herald Tribune, which was jointly published by The New York Times and Washington Post at the time. It was the first collaboration in Asia between Korean and foreign newspapers. In 2013, the New York Times bought out its partner in the International Herald Tribune and rechristened it The International New York Times.

The Korea JoongAng Daily, an affiliate of the JoongAng Group, is scheduled to hold a ceremony to celebrate its 20th anniversary on Wednesday at the Millennium Hilton Hotel in central Seoul.

In the letter, Moon expressed special appreciation to the newspaper for having supported the country’s battle against the Covid-19 pandemic throughout this year.

Since the first case was reported in the country earlier this year, the Korea JoongAng Daily has offered updates on the pandemic to readers on a daily basis. The newspaper also ran a series of reports detailing the Moon administration’s successful implementation of the “K-quarantine” response model.

“The paper’s coverage of epidemic prevention and control guidelines helped protect the safety and health of foreign nationals in Korea and was a great help to Korea’s Covid-19 response,” Moon wrote. “Due to Covid-19, we see once more how closely interlinked the world is. Anticipating the Korea JoongAng Daily’s unwavering dedication, I hope that it continues to gain trust and respect from people around the world.”

Moon noted that the Korea JoongAng Daily has reported major events of great interest to the outside world. He particularly praised the newspaper’s extensive features on the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games and the FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019.

The president also celebrated the newspaper’s role in the field of public diplomacy by hosting annual events such as the Korea Economic Forum and Public Diplomacy Night.

Congratulatory Message from President Moon Jae-in on
20th Anniversary of Korea JoongAng Daily
October 28, 2020

I wholeheartedly congratulate the Korea JoongAng Daily on its 20th anniversary.

Since its founding in 2000, the Korea JoongAng Daily has regarded itself as a window to Korea and steadily strived to keep the world informed about the country. Fulfilling its mission to promptly deliver accurate news on Korea to English-speaking readers at home and abroad, it has established itself as one of the Republic of Korea’s leading English-language dailies.

As Korea’s first global-local newspaper, the Korea JoongAng Daily has published high-quality editions in English for the past 20 years. In this regard, I extend my gratitude and respect to its reporters and staff.

Every time the international community’s attention converged on the Republic of Korea, the Korea JoongAng Daily has been there. During the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games and the FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019, I remember how hard it endeavoured to deliver detailed reports from the games as the official English-language newspaper. The paper’s coverage of epidemic prevention and control guidelines helped protect the safety and health of foreign nationals in Korea and was a great help to Korea’s COVID-19 response. I believe that the Korea JoongAng Daily has been able to set the stage for public diplomacy through its “Korea Economic Forum” and “Public Diplomacy Night” since the paper has consistently safeguarded the readers’ right to know.

Due to COVID-19, we see once more how closely interlinked the world is. Anticipating the Korea JoongAng Daily’s unwavering dedication, I hope that it continues to gain trust and respect from people around the world.

Once again, congratulations on the 20th anniversary of the Korea JoongAng Daily.

Thank you.

Moon Jae-in
President
Republic of Korea
