A slow trickle of visitors began filling the almost empty Incheon International Airport last week, but not to jet off for some overseas travel.

지난주 인천국제공항으로 사람들이 천천히 발길을 향했다. 하지만 이는 해외여행을 떠나기 위한 것이 아니었다.

They were at the airport to experience a virtual reality (VR) exhibition hosted by the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifan).

그들은 부천국제판타스틱영화제가 주최한 VR (가상 현실) 전시를 경험해보기 위해 위해 공항을 찾았다.

Titled “Beyond Reality over Incheon Airport,” the exhibition was put together by festival organizers who teamed up with the Embassy of France and the airport to host a total of 26 VR projects — 11 films and 15 short interactive projects by artists from across the globe.

“인천공항에서 떠나는 가상 콘텐츠 여행”이라는 제목으로 열린 이 전시는 페스티벌 조직위원회와 프랑스 대사관, 인천공항의 협업으로 이뤄진 것으로 전세계 작가들이 작업한 26개 VR 프로젝트(11개 영화 작품과 15개 인터랙티브 작품)를 포함하고 있다.

The festival chose the location based on its theme that visitors can “escape” reality for a brief moment while immersed in a VR experience, similar to how they would escape on vacation.

조직위가 인천공항을 개최지로 고른 이유는 현실을 “도피”한다는 주제에 맞게끔 한 것인데, 여행으로 현실에서 벗어나듯 VR 경험으로 현실을 도피하는 의미를 가진다.

These VR projects were supposed to be introduced in line with Bifan which was held in July, but offline events for the film festival were canceled due to an escalating number of coronavirus cases at the time.

이 VR 작품들은 7월에 열린 부천국제판타스틱영화제와 동시에 소개될 예정이었으나, 당시 증가하는 코로나바이러스 확진자 수로 인해 취소됐다.

Although the situation has not improved much since then, staff will be taking extra care to disinfect the VR headsets after each use.

그 때보다 상황이 많이 나아지지는 않았지만 VR 헤드셋을 소독하기 위해 더 심혈을 기울일 것이라고 한다.

Visitors will not have to remove their masks and will also be provided with eye masks as an additional precautionary measure.

방문객들은 마스크를 벗을 수 없으며 추가적인 예방 조치를 위해 눈을 가리는 마스크도 주어진다.

Fifteen interactive VR experiences located around the first floor at Terminal 1 of the airport — with the briefest spanning four minutes to the longest lasting 45 minutes — each formulate an intricate story and offer a high-quality virtual world where users become ghosts from the underworld revisiting their homes.

공항의 제1터미널 1층에는 15개의 인터랙티브한 VR 전시가 열린다. 4분부터 45분까지 다양한 런닝타임을 가진 작품들로, 각자 높은 퀄리티의 섬세한 이야기를 보여준다. 망자가 되어 다시 집으로 돌아가는 이야기도 있다.

One of the projects is centered on a surreal world where there’s no gravity, while another allows visitors to experience a spiritual ceremony which takes place in the deepest regions of the Amazon.
