Hanjin Transportation and Lotte Global Logistics raised parcel delivery fees by 1,000 won (90 cents) to 2,000 won for retail clients last month.

The two companies said that they raised prices in order to improve the working conditions of delivery workers.

In mid-April Hanjin Transportation raised the delivery price of a parcel that weighs 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) or below by 25 percent from 4,000 won to 5,000 won.

The delivery price for packages that weigh five kilograms or below has been raised by 50 percent from 4,000 won to 6,000 won.

The company also raised the delivery price of parcels that weigh 15 kilograms or below and 20 kilograms or below to 6,000 won and 7,000 won, respectively.

Lotte Global Logistics also raised the price of package delivery by 1,000 won in mid-March. A package weighing 5 kilograms or below now costs 5,000 won, 15 kilograms or below now costs 6,000 won and 25 kilograms or below now costs 7,000 won.

The company “has concluded the need to improve the working conditions of delivery workers as the demand for package delivery increases,” said a source from the industry.

In March, three logistics firms, including CJ Logistics, raised delivery fees for corporate clients, like shopping mall operators, by around 10 percent.
