Hanjin Transportation celebrated its 30th year in the parcel delivery business on Thursday.

It first started its parcel deliveries in June 16, 1992, as the first Korean company to offer such services. Deliveries were carried out under the brand name Pabalma, a Korean word referring to government horses used for delivering important documents during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

The company said it hopes to have 20 percent of the logistics market by end of 2023, with plans to apply various IT technologies to its Daejeon Smart Mega Hub in order to do so. A total of 285 billion won ($221 million) will be invested into the logistics hub, which is slated to open in 2023. The center will be equipped with artificial intelligence-based technologies that automatically sort parcels.

As of 2021, CJ Logistics had 41.9 percent of the parcel delivery market, Hanjin Transportation had 13.2 percent and Lotte Global Logistics had 12.3 percent.

The company will also invest more in delivery automation facilities.

It will open more fulfillment centers in the Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi areas to offer faster deliveries in response to rising e-commerce purchases. More cold chain facilities, or logistics centers and trucks that allow refrigerated deliveries, will be added.

“We will gain growth momentum, doing our best to offer unique and digitized services to customers,” said a spokesperson for Hanjin Transportation.
