Hyundai Mobis aims to to triple owned patents by 2025

Hyundai Mobis plans to triple the number of patents and design rights it owns by 2025 as the future auto industry is expected to require a growing amount of original technology, the company said Sunday.

The auto parts company that owns 21.4 percent of Hyundai Motor said it applied for some 2,000 patents last year, half of which are related to future mobility. It will not only develop its own intellectual property rights, but also purchase patents from external institutions.

It will also collaborate with smaller companies to patent promising technology.

Hyundai Mobis currently owns 4,000 patents.

The company said it has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Yonsei University Office of Research Affairs to cooperate on that ambition. Under the partnership, Hyundai Mobis will purchase patents owned by the research institution related to autonomous driving and connected vehicles.

“With the rapid distribution of 5G networks and electric vehicles, auto companies are competing fiercely with newcomers from the network and battery segments,” the company said in a release.

“Possessing a wide extent of patents will help prevent conflict with newcomers and also act as a negotiating card when obtaining orders.”
