Korean sporting legends Park Chan-ho, Cho Wonhee, Ki Bo-bae and Yeo Hong-chul shared their views on the 2020 Tokyo Games at a press conference on Wednesday.

한국 스포츠의 전설 박찬호, 조원희, 기보배와 여홍철은 수요일 도쿄올림픽 간담회에서 올림픽에 대한 의견을 나누었다.

Park is Korean baseball royalty. He was the first Korean to play in the major league on April 8, 1994, and still holds the record for the most MLB wins by an Asian-born player, with 124.

박찬호는 한국 야구의 왕족이라고도 할 수 있다. 그는 1994년 4월 8일 메이저리그에 데뷔하여 최초의 메이저리거 한국인이 되었고 메이저리그 124승으로 아시아 출신 선수 중 최다 우승 기록을 아직까지 보유하고 있다.

Park has never played on the big stage but was part of the national baseball team at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games when Korea won gold.

박찬호는 올림픽에서 뛴 적은 없지만 1998년 방콕 아시안 게임에서 국가대표로 뛰면서 한국 야구 대표팀의 금메달을 이끌어냈다.

Cho is a former midfielder on the Korean national football team. Ki is a three-time Olympic gold medalist in archery. Yeo, a retired gymnast, is a silver medalist from the 1996 Atlanta Games vault event.

조원희는 한국 국가대표 축구팀의 미드필더 출신이고, 기보배는 올림픽 양궁 금메달 3관왕이며 여홍철은 체조 국가대표 출신으로 1996년 아틀랜타 올림픽 도마 종목 은메달리스트이다.

Park was optimistic about the Korean baseball team's chances in Tokyo.

박찬호는 도쿄 올림픽에서 한국 야구팀의 가능성에 대해 긍정적인 반응이었다.

“Though I did not play at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I take pride in Korea’s gold medal as a Korean baseball player” said Park when asked how he thinks the national baseball team will do on the big stage.

한국 야구 팀이 도쿄 올림픽에서 어떤 성과를 낼지에 대한 질문을 받고 박찬호는 “저는 2008년 베이징 올림픽에 출전하지 못했지만, 한국 야구 선수로서 야구 금메달에 자부심을 느낍니다.”라며 대답을 시작했다.

"We get more competitive as a team when it comes to Japan. Our team’s strength is teamwork and head coach Kim Kyung-moon has picked out the most experienced and mentally strong athletes.”

“아무래도 한국은 일본에 있어서 더욱 더 뒤지지 않으려고 합니다. 한국 팀의 장점은 팀워크입니다. 김경문 감독은 가장 경험이 많고 정신력이 강한 선수들로 팀을 구성했습니다.”

“The Olympics are taking place at the most challenging of times. It won’t be an easy match but I hope it gives the Korean people the hope and energy that we need.”

“이번 올림픽은 정말 어려운 시기에 개최하는 만큼, 쉽지 않은 경기겠지만, 한국 국민들에게 희망과 힘을 주기를 소망합니다.”
