A mockery of tragedy (KOR)

The dawn of April 26, 1986, was recorded as a tragic day for humanity. A nuclear power plant exploded in Chernobyl, 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of the Ukraine capital of Kiev, then Soviet Union. Tremendous amounts of radioactive material spread not only in Ukraine but also in Belarus and Russia.

The scope of the damage could not be counted. The Chernobyl Forum of experts estimated in a 2005 report that 56 people were killed and 4,000 people exposed to radiation died of disease later. Environmental groups claim that there are tens of thousands of victims complaining about aftereffects.

In 2019, HBO released a five-part documentary drama titled Chernobyl. The accident was reconstructed based on historical investigation. It exposed the reducing and cover-up by the Soviet government.

The series was highly acclaimed with a record-breaking rating and won 10 Emmys and 2 Golden Globes. Viewers raved over the drama that did not contain any flashy action scenes or surprise twists.

Some people visit Chernobyl in person to remember the tragedy. While overseas travel is restricted now due to the Covid-10 pandemic, the Chernobyl region attracted “dark tourism” after visits were allowed in 2011. (Dark tourism refers to the travel trend of visiting the scene of a tragedy such as a war or disaster.) Visitors increased, as the drama was a hit. The purpose of the tour is to feel the pain and learn the lessons of history.

On July 23, MBC’s Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony broadcast sparked controversy over its mention of Chernobyl. The broadcaster inserted a photo of the Chernobyl nuclear accident while the Ukrainian athletes were entering. They used the tragedy to introduce the country. Criticism poured in, and controversy spread after it was reported by foreign media. MBC President Park Sung-je apologized for the broadcast that undermined the spirit of the Olympics.

The Chernobyl accident is a tragedy that must not be forgotten. The same disaster won’t be repeated when we investigate the cause and learn from it. Of course, it is uncomfortable and painful to be reminded of the tragedy. Viewers of the drama series and dark tourism visitors remember Chernobyl with pain. There is no way to recall the tragedy in a fun, witty way. Such an attempt itself is a mockery on the tragedy.

체르노빌을 기억하는 법

1986년 4월 26일 새벽은 인류에게 비극으로 기록된 날이다. 우크라이나(당시 구소련) 수도 키예프에서 북쪽으로 90㎞ 떨어진 체르노빌에서 원전이 폭발했다. 엄청난 양의 방사성 물질이 우크라이나는 물론 벨라루스·러시아 등으로 뿌려졌다. 피해규모 파악이 힘들 정도였다. 전문가로 구성된 체르노빌 포럼은 2005년 보고서를 통해 56명이 사망했고, 방사선에 피폭된 4000명이 향후 질병으로 사망한다고 추정했다. 환경단체들은 후유증을 호소하는 피해자만 수만 명이라고 주장한다.

2019년 미국의 제작사 HBO는 ‘체르노빌’이란 5부작 다큐멘터리 드라마를 선보였다. 철저한 고증을 통해 사고의 전모를 재구성했다. 소련 정부의 축소ㆍ은폐 정황도 낱낱이 고발한다. 미국 내 최고 시청률을 경신하는 등 호평을 받았고, 그해 에미상(10개 부문)과 골든글로브(2개 부문)에서 각종 상을 쓸어담았다. 화려한 액션도, 화끈한 반전도 없는 다큐 드라마에 시청자는 열광했다.

직접 체르노빌을 찾아 비극을 기억하는 사람들도 있다. 지금이야 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19) 여파로 해외 방문이 힘들어졌지만, 체르노빌 지역은 2011년 방문이 허용된 이후 다크투어 여행객으로 북적였다. 특히 드라마가 인기를 끌면서 여행객이 더 늘었다. 다크투어란 전쟁이나 재해 등 비극의 현장을 찾아가는 여행 트렌드를 일컫는다. 아픔을 느끼고, 역사의 교훈을 얻는 것이 이 여행의 목적이다.

지난 23일 MBC의 도쿄올림픽 개회식 중계방송에선 때아닌 체르노빌의 등장으로 논란이 일었다. 방송사 측은 우크라이나 선수단이 입장하는 장면에서 체르노빌 원전사고 사진을 삽입했다. 온 세계가 기억하는 비극으로 한 나라를 소개한 것이다. 비난이 빗발쳤고, 해외 언론에도 알려지면서 파장이 커졌다. 결국 박성제 MBC 사장이 26일 “올림픽 정신을 훼손하는 방송을 했다”며 고개를 숙였다.

체르노빌 원전사고는 잊혀선 안될 비극이다. 원인을 따지고 교훈을 새겨야 똑같은 일이 재발하지 않는다. 물론 비극을 다시 떠올리는 일은 불편하고 고통스럽다. 드라마 시청자나 다크투어 여행자도 체르노빌을 아프게 기억한다. 재미있고 위트있게 비극을 기억하는 방법은 없다. 그런 시도 자체가 비극에 대한 조롱이다.
