Feb. 5: Korean soprano Park Hye-sang will be holding a recital to promote her latest release “I Am Hera” with the German classical music label Deutsche Grammophon (DG), Nov. 6. The album release has been pushed back due to Covid-19 situation in Germany. She was finally able to record it after relocating to Sweden.
 
The album includes two songs she sings in Korean. They are gagok, or original Korean vocal music. The two songs are: “Like the Wind That Met With Lotus” written by the late Korean poet Seo Jeong-ju and set to music by Kim Ju-won, and “Psalm 23” with music by La Un-yung. Park is the second Korean artist to sign an international contract with DG after pianist Cho Sung-jin.  
 
The album also includes Giulio Caccini’s “Amarilli, mia bella,” Ottorino Respighi’s “Il tramonto” and Geroge Gershwin’s “Lullaby” among many others.  
 
Tickets range from 40,000 won ($33.45) to 100,000 won.  
 
The recital begins at 5 p.m.

FANTASY TALE

Through Feb. 12: Kim Dong-yeon, who has created a range of hits in diverse genres, wrote and directed “Fantasy Tale” and premiered it in 2003.    
 
Since then, the piece has matured through many runs over the past 17 years. In 2020, its first rerun in six years enjoyed immense success, leading the show to be part of this year’s National Repertory Season.  
 
The War Clown, Love Clown and Art Clown, compete with each other to tell their version of the story of Hans, a piano player who lost his hearing in the turmoil of war, and Marie, a dancer who lost her sight — fusing the themes of war, love and art.  
  
The performance features many elements coming together for a more lively and dynamic experience: dance, music, mime and magic.    
 
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, weekends and public holidays.   
 
Tickets range from 55,000 won to 77,000 won.

2AM CONCERT

Feb. 12 – 13: K-pop boy band 2AM will be holding a solo concert for the first time in nine years. The upcoming concert is titled “2AM Concert 22 S/S.” The concert follows the group’s recent EP “Ballad 21 F/W” which was released in November last year. The album dropped after the band took a seven-year break.      
 
The organizers said the upcoming concert “will showcase 2AM’s journey from the beginning of its encounters, and that the members' sweet voices will melt the hearts of audience members around Valentine’s Day.”  
 
2AM debuted in 2008 under JYP Entertainment and released hit songs such as “This Song” (2008), “Never Let You Go” (2010) and “I Was Wrong” (2010). The band has four members — Jinwoon, Jo Kwon, Seulong and Changmin. 2AM is also known as the “brother group” of boy band 2PM.    
 
Tickets cost 132,000 won.    
 
The concert beings at 6 p.m. on Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

MR SHOW

Through Feb. 13: Presented as a pure sexual fantasy for women, “Mr Show” is an R-rated show, which is off-limits to men. The male performers are clothed in various outfits — from dress suits to underwear. The organizing agency launched the show in 2014, explaining that “Mr. Show” has been produced for today’s Korean women, who need a place to release their stress.  
 
The show begins at 8 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, and at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. There are no shows on Tuesdays.    
 
Tickets range from 66,000 won to 88,000 won.

VALENTINE FOR YOU AND ME

Feb. 14: The Lotte Concert Hall has organized a special concert for the upcoming Valentine’s day. A classical music trio Layers Classic, cellist Cho Yoon-kyung and saxophonist Brandon Choi will be performing various romantic classical music pieces that the love birds would love to hear on this day.  
 
The concert begins with Schubert’s “Serenade,” Ennio Morricone’s “Love Affair” as well as several pop songs like “You Are Not Alone” by Michael Jackson among many others. 
 
Tickets range from 30,000 won to 70,000 won.

Through Feb. 13: “Billy Elliot” is back. The story takes place in the 1980s, during a coal miners’ strike in Northern England. Billy happens to stumble across ballet during one of his boxing classes, and his life is changed forever after he discovers his love, and talent, for dance.  
 
“Billy Elliot” is a heartwarming and humorous story about a young boy and his family trying to fulfill their dreams through music and choreography.  
 
The kids who have been cast to alternate the role of Billy are, Kim Shi-hoon, Lee Woo-jin, Jeong Kang-hyuk and Joo Hyun-joon.  
 
Ticket prices range from 60,000 to 150,000 won.  
 
The show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends.

FRANKENSTEIN

Through Feb. 20: Based on Mary Shelley’s 1823 novel of the same name, this musical produced in Korea adds new characters and creative plot twists to the classic monster tale.  
The musical is set in 19th century Europe and centers on the efforts of Swiss scientists Victor Frankenstein and Dr. Henry Dupre to create a fearless, immortal soldier.  
 
However, the experiment goes awry, and a dangerous monster is born.  
 
Actors Min Woo-hyuk, Jeon Dong-seok, and Kyuhyun alternate the role of Victor, while Park Eun-tae, Kai and Jeong Taek-woon alternate the role of Henry Dupre, a character that only exists in the Korean production.    
 
The performance starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays, as well as weekends and national holidays. There are no performances on Mondays.

NOTRE DAME DE PARIS

Feb. 25 – March 13: The original French production team of the musical “Notre Dame de Paris” will be returning to Seoul to show its appreciation for the Koreans who showed “so much love,” according to the production team. Its previous run in Seoul had to end about a month early in January 2021 because of Covid-19.    
 
The musical is based on the 1831 French novel by Victor Hugo. Set in the 15th century, “Notre Dame” follows several characters including Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer of the Notre-Dame Cathedral who is in love with a beautiful dancer named Esmeralda.  
 
Actors Angelo Del Vicchio and Maximilien Philippe will alternate the role of Quasimodo while Elhaida Dani and Jame Bono will take on the role of Esmeralda.    
 
The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays.    
 
There are no shows on Mondays.

REBECCA

Through Feb. 27: The Korean production of a hit musical “Rebecca” is back in Seoul.  
The musical is based on a Gothic romance novel by Daphne du Maurier, but it is reportedly also inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film “Rebecca.”  
 
The musical, which combines romance and suspense, first hit the stage in Vienna in 2006.  
Set in a mansion called Manderley, “Rebecca” tells the story of Maxim de Winter, a wealthy widower who lost his wife Rebecca in a drowning accident and cannot get over the traumatic incident. Maxim marries another woman but his new wife learns a disturbing secret that Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper of the mansion, still worships the late Rebecca. 
 
When the musical was first staged in Seoul, it was the highest-selling musical for five consecutive weeks. It still attracts musical aficionados, who have already watched it multiple times.    
 
Musical director Robert Johanson has been at the helm of the production since its premiere.  
Four actors including Min Young-ki, Kim Jun-hyun, Enok and Lee Jang-woo will alternate the role of Mr. de Winter, while actresses Shin Young-sook and Oak Joo-hyun will play Mrs. Danvers.  
 
The show begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, and at 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Through March 18: The international tour team of the musical “The Lion King,” which visited Korea for the first time in 2018, is back again for a seven-week run.    
 
Based on Disney’s 1994 animated film of the same name, the musical has been seen by over 95 million people in more than 100 cities in 20 countries since its premiere in 1997.  
 
The musical is directed by Julie Taymor with music by legendary lyricist Tim Rice, Elton John, Lebo M, Hans Zimmer and many more.    
 
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.    
 
Tickets range from 60,000 won to 180,000 won.

JEKYLL AND HYDE

Through May 8: Popular musical “Jekyll and Hyde,” which tells the tale of an epic battle between good and evil, has been loved in Korea since its first performance in 2004.  
 
The cast includes Ryu Jeong-hwan, Hong Kwang-ho and Shin Seong-rok in the roles of Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde, and Yoon Gong-ju and Ivy Seon-min for the role of Lucy Harris. EMK Entertainment, the show’s production team recently added musical actor Kai in the cast for Dr. Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde. He will begin performing from Feb. 25.   
 
Until this month, evening performances will begin at 7 p.m. There are additional performances on Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on weekends. There are no shows on Mondays.
