First meeting between Moon and Yoon called off last minute

A first meeting between President Moon Jae-in and President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol was called off last minute Wednesday because preparatory discussions have not yet been completed, according to both sides.

call off: 취소하다

수요일 예정됐던 문재인 대통령과 윤석열 대통령 당선인의 첫 회동이 마지막 순가에 취소됐다. 준비 협의가 다 끝나지 않았기 때문이라는 게 양측의 설명이다.

Moon and Yoon had been scheduled to have a oneon-one luncheon meeting at noon at the Blue House, without any aides accompanying them, which would have reunited the president with his former prosecutor general following his election victory last week.

accompany: 동반하다, 수반하다

문 대통령과 윤 당선인은 청와대에서 배석자 없이 일대일 오찬 회동을 하기로 계획했었다. 지난주 있었던 대통령 선거 이후 처음으로 현 대통령과 차기 대통령이 만나는 것이었다. 게다가 윤 당선인은 한때 문 대통령의 검찰총장이었다.

The meeting was announced jointly the previous day, and was expected to be a chance for the two to have "candid" talks to help ensure a smooth transition process between presidencies and discuss key issues such as North Korea and Covid-19 recovery.

바로 하루 전 대통령과 당선인의 회동 계획을 양측이 함께 발표했다. 그래서 대북 정책과 코로나19 회복 등 핵심 현안들을 논의하고 신구 대통령간 권력이양이 순조롭게 이뤄지도록 대통령과 당선인이 솔직하게 대화할 기회일 것으로 예상됐다.

However, the two sides canceled it just four hours before the scheduled meeting. It is unprecedented for such a planned meeting between the incumbent president and the president-elect to be canceled so abruptly.

그러나 양측은 불과 4시간 전에 예정된 회동을 취소했다. 현 대통령과 대통령 당선인이 만날 약속을 갑자기 취소한 것은 전례가 없는 일이다.

Blue House spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said in a statement, "As working-level consultations have not been completed for the planned meeting between President Moon and President-elect Yoon, we decided to reschedule the meeting."

박경미 청와대 대변인은 성명을 통해 "문 대통령과 윤 당선인의 회동을 위한 실무협의가 다 끝나지 않아서 회동 일정을 다시 잡기로 했다"고 말했다.

Kim Eun-hye, Yoon's spokesperson, echoed a similar message that "working-level consultations have not been completed" and that the two sides plan to continue such discussions in a briefi ng at the People Power Party's (PPP) headquarters in Yeouido, western Seoul.

서울 여의도 국민의힘 당사에서 김은혜 당선인 대변인도 "실무협의가 다 끝나지 않았고" 양측이 협의를 계속하고 있다는 내용으로 비슷하게 설명했다.
