Laughing off comedy as comedy (KOR)

“Ever since you’ve come into office, things are really looking up. You know, gas is up, rent is up, food is up, everything,” said Trevor Noah at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 30. The annual event returned after three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The famous comedian joked about the continued price increase in the Biden administration. Two-thousand-six-hundred attendees, including President Biden, laughed at his jokes.

While he made jokes about Biden’s blunders and his age — as Biden turns 80 in November — the president seemed to enjoy the set without frowning even once. How about his predecessor Donald Trump? President Trump boycotted the event and did not attend any of them, calling it “so boring” and “so negative.”

The historic event of the U.S. media has continued since the White House Correspondents, formed in 1914, invited President Calvin Coolidge in 1924. On the last Saturday of April each year, White House correspondents who are usually critical of the commanders in chief spend time with them and celebrate one another’s hard work. Aside from a few years, the tradition of a comedian “roasting” the president, politicians and journalists has been kept.

Some attendees have left the dinner because some jokes were too cruel. There is even a rumor that Trump decided to run for president when he was invited as a television personality in 2011 and felt insulted by some jokes. But no comedian has been oppressed or had the career ruined because of jokes made at the dinner.

After making some painful jokes, Noah asked Biden if he would end up in jail. It was a joke, too, but not all Americans are tolerant to jokes, as actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife during the live broadcasting of the Academy Awards ceremony in March.

Nevertheless, I want to see Korean politicians and the president have the tolerance to laugh off comedy as comedy, not as documentary. The 20th president of Korea was inaugurated on Tuesday. Rather than confrontation and antagonism, I hope a mature and relaxed political environment can be established in this country too.

지난달 30일(현지시각) 코로나 유행으로 3년 만에 다시 열린 미 백악관 출입기자단 주최 연례만찬에서 유명 코미디언 트레버 노아(Trevor Noah)가 행사에 참석한 조 바이든 대통령을 놀리며 한 말이다. 무엇보다 바이든 정부가 들어선 후 계속되고 있는 물가인상을 ‘잘~~되고 있다’라는 말로 비꼬았다. 노아 특유의 끝까지 들어봐야 하는 유머에 바이든 대통령을 포함한 참석자 2600여 명이 빵 터지고 말았다.

노아는 이 외에도 바이든의 말실수와 고령(올해 11월이면 80세) 등을 웃음거리로 삼았지만 대통령은 그럴 때도 얼굴 찌푸림 하나 없이 함께 즐거워하는 모습을 보였다. 전임자인 도널드 트럼프는 어땠을까. 트럼프 대통령은 이 행사를 “너무나도 지루(so boring)하고 부정적(so negative)”이라고 보이콧하며 재임 동안 한 번도 참석하지 않았다.

미 언론계에서 유서 깊은 이 행사는 1914년에 결성된 백악관 출입기자단이 캘빈 쿨리지 대통령을 초대한 1924년부터 이어져 왔다. 이후 매년 4월 마지막 토요일은 평소 비판의 날을 세워왔던 출입기자들이 최고통수권자와 함께 서로의 노고를 위로하는 날이 됐다. 또 몇 해를 제외하고는 코미디언이 대통령과 정치인·언론인을 조롱(roast)하는 전통을 지켜왔다. 때로는 농담이 너무 잔인하다는 이유로 참석자 일부가 자리를 뜬 일도 있고, 2011년 만찬에 초대됐던 당시 방송인 트럼프는 자신을 희화하는 데 수모를 느끼고 대통령 출마를 결심했다는 설도 있다. 하지만 지금까지 그날 뱉은 농담의 여파로 커리어가 망가지거나 탄압을 받은 코미디언은 없었다.

트레버 노아도 뼈있는 농담을 실컷 쏟아놓은 뒤 바이든 대통령을 진지한 눈빛으로 쳐다보며 물었다, “저, 감옥 가는 거 아니죠?” 그것도 농담이었지만 지난 3월 오스카 시상식 생방송 중 배우 윌 스미스가 자신의 아내에 대한 농담에 격분해 코미디언 크리스 록을 가격한 사건을 보면 미국인이라고 모두 농담에 관대한 것도 아닌 듯하다.

그럼에도 우리는 정치인도, 대통령도 코미디를 다큐멘터리가 아닌 코미디 그 자체로 웃어넘기는 여유를 보고 싶다. 오늘은 마침 대한민국의 20대 대통령이 취임하는 날이다. 대립과 반목보다 한층 더 성숙하고 여유 있는 정치환경이 자리잡길 또 다시 기대한다.
