Korean animation films “Chun Tae-il: A Flame That Lives On” (2021) and “Persona” (2022) took home awards from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France on Monday.

According to the festival's list of winners, director Hong Jun-pyo’s “Chun Tae-il” received the Contrechamp Jury Distinction prize. “Persona” by director Moon Su-jin won the top prize of Cristal for a Graduation Film.

“Chun Tae-il: A Flame That Lives On” tells the story of labor activist Chun Tae-il (1948-70) who died after setting himself on fire to raise awareness on the poor labor conditions in Korea at the time. The film hit local theaters in December 2021.

“Persona” is a six-minute animation about a person who wears a full-body mask in the shape of a doll, a metaphor for the façade people present to others in order to fit into society. “Persona” was the first Korean animation film to be invited to the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and screened in competition last month.

The Annecy International Animation Film Festival is held annually in Annecy, France. This year’s edition ran from June 13 to 18.
