Naver Webtoon and Literature Translation Institute sign MOU to educate translators

Naver Webtoon and the Literature Translation Institute of Korea (LTI) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to nurture professionals specializing in the translation of webtoons through education programs, the webtoon company said Wednesday.

Through the MOU, the translation institute will establish a translation course that focuses on webtoons over other literary genres. After enrolling in the class, students will be given a chance at translating works on Naver Webtoon in various languages.

Naver Webtoon currently provides its works in 10 languages other than Korean, including English, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian and Spanish.

“The history of Hallyu [the Korean Wave] will be the history of translation,” said Kwak Hyo-hwan, president of LTI, in a press release. “We aim to become a leading institute in art culture content with Naver Webtoon, a company spearheading the international spread of Korean webtoons and web novels.”
