Construction on a 26-megawatt data center in Geumcheon District, southern Seoul, has begun, KT Cloud announced Thursday. The cloud business subsidiary of KT will oversee its operation when the building is complete.

Named Gasan IDC, an acronym for internet data center, the new data center will be able to cover the data loads in the greater Seoul area with KT’s Yongsan IDC, which opened in 2020.

Gasan IDC, which KT described as a hyper-scale data center, will have 10 stories above ground and five under, with more than 100,000 servers. The construction is scheduled to be completed by 2025. It is a joint project involving DL Construction, KT and KT Cloud, funded through a project financing organized by Shinhan Investment.

Spun off from KT in April, KT Cloud aims to secure 100 megawatts of data capacity by 2025 to handle the quickly growing amount of data transmissions.
