Kim Sun-woo, Seong Seung-min and Jang Ha-eun won the UlPM 2022 Pentathlon World Championships women's team silver medal in Alexandria, Egypt on Saturday.

This is Korea’s first-ever women’s team modern pentathlon medal at the World Championships.

Great Britain won the gold medal with 4,161 points, Korea won silver with 3,987 points and Hungary won the bronze medal with 3,815 points.

The silver marks Korea’s third medal at the championships, after having won the men’s relay gold medal and women’s relay bronze medal.

Jun Woong-tae and Jung Jin-hwa won the gold medal on July 24 while Kim Se-hee and Kim Sun-woo combined to win the bronze medal the next day.

While Jun, Jung, Kim Se-hee and Kim Sun-woo are Olympians and have some international experience under their belts, Seong Seung-min and Jang Ha-eun have less international experience and have not competed on the big stage, suggesting the future is bright for Korean modern pentathlon.

“I am excited for the future of our younger athletes who were able to win the team silver medal,” said Choi Eun-jong, head coach of the Korean modern pentathlon national team.

“Not only did they win the team medal, but they also reached the World Championship individual finals just months after joining the national team and learning to ride horses.”

Korea failed to win any individual medals at the World Championships. Jung and Jun finished 14th and 17th respectively in the men's finals while Jang, Seong and Kim Sun-woo finished 13th, 15th and 17th in the women's finals.

As of press time, Korea was still set to compete for one last medal as Jun and Kim Sun-woo will take part in the mixed relay on Sunday in Alexandria.
