Several K-pop acts take home prizes from 2022 MTV VMAs
Several K-pop acts took home trophies from the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey on Sunday.
K-pop sensation BTS won Group of the Year at the VMAs for the fourth year in a row since its first win in 2019, beating formidable contenders like the Foo Fighters, Imagine Dragons and Måneskin.
The boy band was the most-nominated group at this year’s VMAs, in six categories. BTS did not attend the awards in person as the seven members have been focusing on solo pursuits since June.
Girl group Blackpink also received two awards at this year’s ceremony, a first for a K-pop girl group. Blackpink won Best Metaverse Performance for its in-game concert “Blackpink The Virtual” held in July in collaboration with the online game PUBG Mobile, and Best K-pop Song for member Lisa’s solo debut song “Lalisa” (2021). The four members — Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé and Lisa — attended the event and proudly held up their trophies.
“Thank you so much for making this happen,” said Lisa, giving a shoutout to Blackpink’s fandom Blink as well as her bandmates. Lisa is now the first solo K-pop artist to win at the VMAs.
Blackpink also performed its latest song “Pink Venom,” a pre-release single from its upcoming full-length album “Born Pink,” live at the VMAs. It marked the girl group’s first time attending the event in person or performing on an American award show. Previously in 2020, Blackpink won Song Of Summer with “How You Like That,” its first win at the VMAs.
Boy band Seventeen also took home its first award at the VMAs, winning Push Performance of the Year with its song “Rock With You” (2021) from its ninth EP “Attacca.” Seventeen was unable to attend the ceremony in person due to conflicting schedules, but delivered an acceptance speech via video expressing their gratitude.
