The recent murder of a young subway worker at Sindang Station in Seoul has kindled a massive outpouring of grief and frustration across Korea, as mourners ask why local authorities failed to protect the victim from her alleged stalker after so many distress signals.

서울 중구 서울지하철 2호선과 6호선 신당역 공중화장실 외벽에는 피해자를 애도하고 경찰, 법원, 서울교통공사에게 울분을 터뜨리는 메시지를 담은 포스트잇들이 수많이 붙어있다. 지난주 수요일 신당역 공중 화장실에서 31세 남성이 28세 여성 역무원을 칼로 찔러 살해했다. 남성은 여성을 수년간 스토킹하고 있었다. 두 사람은 서울교통공사 입사 후 서로 알게 됐다.

The victim and suspect were hired by the cityrun Seoul Metro, which operates the majority of the subway lines passing through the Korean capital, in 2018. The male worker began to stalk his female colleague from late 2019, according to police.

피해자와 피의자는 서울 지하철 노선 대부분을 운영하는 서울교통공사에 2018년 입사했다. 경찰에 따르면, 남성은 2019년 말부터 여성을 스토킹하기 시작했다.

The stalker was relieved of his duties in October 2021 and was awaiting a court trial after the victim sued him for stalking her and threatening to upload “illegally filmed video footage” of her on the internet if she kept refusing to date him.

남성은 만나주지 않으면 “불법으로 촬영한 여성의 동영상”을 인터넷에 올리겠다고 협박했다. 여성은 스토킹하던 남성을 고소했고 남성은 2021년 10월 스토킹 행위로 직위해제됐고 재판 받고 있었다.

Police didn’t publicly specify what the footage was, but explained that the suspect was found to have contacted the victim nearly 350 times from November 2019 to October 2021, begging her to go on a date with him.

경찰은 동영상이 무엇인지는 구체적으로 밝히지 않았으나, 남성이 여성에게 만나자며 2019년 11월부터 2021년 10월까지 350여 차례 여성에게 연락한 것으로 확인했다고 설명했다.
