Scores died Saturday in Itaewon in a horrific crowd crush during the first Halloween celebrations since most Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.

코로나19 방역 규제들이 대부분 해제된 이후 첫 핼러윈 축제를 즐기러 이태원으로 몰린 인파 때문에 토요일 압사사고가 발생해 많은 사람들이 사망했다.

The tragedy left Korea in shock and wondering how an evening of fun could turn fatal for so many so quickly, and how one of Seoul's most iconic locations could be left looking like war zone in a matter of minutes.

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, 156 deaths and 151 injuries were confirmed by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters. The tragedy was Korea’s deadliest disaster since the Sewol Ferry sinking in 2014, which took the lives of 304 people, mostly high school students.

화요일 오전 11시 현재 중앙재난안전대책본부는 이태원 참사로 156명이 사망했고 151명이 부상을 입은 것으로 확인했다. 이태원 참사는 2014년 세월호 침몰사고 이후 최대 사고이다. 세월호 침몰로 승객 304명이 숨졌다. 사망자 대부분은 고등학생들이었다.

Of the dead, 101 are female and 55 are male. Most were reported to be young women in their 20s. Twenty-six foreigners from 14 countries died: five from Iran; four from China and Russia; two from the Japan and the United States; and one from Australia, Austria, France, Kazakhstan, Norway, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

사망자 가운데 101명은 여성이고 55명은 남성이다. 사망자 대부분은 20대 젊은 여성들인 것으로 보고됐다. 사망자 중에서 외국인도 26명(14개국) 있다. 출신국별로는 이란 5명, 중국 4명, 러시아 4명, 일본 2명, 미국 2명과 호주, 오스트리아, 프랑스, 카자흐스탄, 노르웨이, 스리랑카, 태국, 우즈베키스탄, 베트남 각 1명이다.

Halloween has become increasingly popular in Seoul over the last decade, with crowds flocking to clubs and bars in Itaewon — the setting Netflix drama "Itaewon Class" — which is known for its lively international nightlife district.
