The government will issue another executive order Thursday as the strike by the Cargo Truckers Solidarity reaches its 15th day, ordering truckers in the fuel and steel sectors to return to work.

The executive order Thursday will be the second such order following the first regarding truckers in the cement sector on Nov. 29.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said during his opening remarks of a cabinet meeting at the Seoul government complex Thursday morning that "an executive order will be issued to commence a return to work in the fuel and steel sectors."

"Due to truckers' refusal to transport cargo, factories have accumulated inventory and have reached a level where they can no longer operate," said Han. "There is a concern that this will spread to a general crisis. The situation in front of us is so urgent and serious to the extent that we cannot wait for the voluntary return to work of the striking truckers any longer."

Han stressed that the executive order is the government's best effort and a special measure to protect the Korean economy and industries in the midst of an economic crisis. "Please return to your respective positions to protect our economy," said Han Thursday.

"The government will not compromise with illegality and will strictly hold those accountable," Han also said. "I earnestly ask the people to believe in and support the government so that we can create a labor market where laws and principles stand upright."
