Hyundai Motor Group took the top spot in the 2023 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), beating Toyota and General Motors, the automaker said Friday.

A total of 21 Hyundai, Genesis and Kia vehicles were examined and scored an average of 160.

Toyota came in second place with a score of 163, followed by General Motors with 165.

J.P. Power collects feedback from customers on 184 problem areas to determine their dissatisfaction levels. Lower scores correspond to greater customer satisfaction. Respondents must have driven the cars for at least three years.

The latest vehicle dependability study was conducted on 227 models from 31 auto brands sold in the United States between July 2019 and February 2020.

Kia topped the list in terms of the mass market brand segment for three consecutive years. Hyundai Motor was in eighth place.

Genesis was No. 2 of a total of 18 luxury brands. Genesis is a premium auto brand under Hyundai Motor.

For the compact car segment, Kia's K3 was No. 1, while its K5 ranked first in the midsized car segment. Kia's Sportage topped the list in terms of the compact SUV sector.

Tesla officially included for the first time, with a score of 242.
