Galaxy S23 has more recycled material than S22: Samsung

The Samsung Electronics Galaxy S23 has more recycled components than any of its predecessors, according to the smartphone maker.

It is the first time that Samsung incorporated recycled materials in the external device components of Galaxy smartphones.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra model, which comes with a stylus, has 12 components containing recycled materials, while the Galaxy S23+ and the standard models have 11.

In the Galaxy S22 series released last year, plastics recycled from discarded fishing nets were used in six of the internal components of the mobile phone.

“Our goal is to replace 50 percent of the plastic materials used in the products with recycled plastic by 2025,” said Park Sung-sun, executive vice president and head of the mechanical R&D team of the mobile business at Samsung Electronics, during a press briefing held Monday in Jung District, central Seoul.

“And by 2050, we aim to adopt 100 percent recycled plastics,” said Park.

Plastic materials 20 percent recycled from discarded fishing nets were incorporated in the stylus for the Galaxy S23 Ultra model and the speaker module.

The front and back glass of the Galaxy S23 model is 22 percent recycled glass, and recycled aluminum was adopted in the side keys, volume keys and SIM card tray.

The front case of the smartphone contains 10 percent of plastics recycled from PET bottles.

The Galaxy S23’s packaging is made of 100 percent recycled paper, and the plastic film attached to the front and back of the smartphone is also replaced with recycled paper, according to Samsung Electronics.

Samsung Electronics released the Galaxy S23 series on Feb. 1 and started accepting orders on Feb. 7.
