Samsung Display fails to reach agreement on pay, hours with labor union
Samsung Display and its labor union failed to reach an agreement over pay and working hours on Thursday, according to industry sources.
The labor union will take matters to the National Labor Relations Commission and adjust the labor dispute. The union is reportedly considering a strike.
The display manufacturer's labor union claimed that the company did not acknowledge the union's position as a bargaining representative.
Among the 26 items for negotiation proposed by the labor group, only two — going on leave by the hour and more benefit points — were accepted by the company.
Paid time off, a policy that allows workers to get paid for the hours they engage in labor union activities, is one item for which the two parties have had difficulty narrowing down their differences.
Samsung Display offered 7,000 paid time off hours for a union with 1,800 or more members. The union demanded 11,000 hours for the same number of members.
Samsung Display’s labor union went on strike in 2021 for the first time in the company's history after the labor commission decided to end the dispute adjustment.
Korean labor law allows unions to take industrial actions, such as a strike, after an adjustment procedure.
