President Yoon Suk Yeol declared Gangneung, Gangwon, a special disaster zone Wednesday after the coastal city suffered damages from a huge wildfire the previous day.

Yoon instructed acting Interior Minister Han Chang-seob to "exert all efforts for disaster relief to promptly allow residents to return to their daily lives," said presidential spokesperson Lee Do-woon in a written statement.

The declaration will initiate a joint damage survey to calculate the government expenditure for recovery, which will be provided in an expedited manner, added Lee.
