Art lovers are getting excited as two of the country’s biggest art events - Frieze Seoul and Kiaf Seoul - will kick off simultaneously for a weeklong celebration of culture and art in September 2023. The Seoul Metropolitan Government will also launch “Seoul Art Week” from Sept. 1 to 10 as well as hold and support different events and parties across the city to ensure visitors coming to Korea for the fair get the most out of the city and the two fairs during their stay.

오는 9월 굵직한 두 개의 아트페어 - 프리즈 서울과 키아프 서울 - 가 동시에 열리며 일주일간 열릴 미술 축제에 미술 애호가들은 기대에 부풀어 있다. 서울시는 9월 1일부터 10일까지 ‘미술주간’을 운영하며 아트페어를 위해 한국을 방문하는 관람객들이 아트페어 뿐만 아니라 서울에서도 최대한 다양한 경험을 하고 갈 수 있도록 다양한 행사와 파티를 개최하거나 지원한다고 밝혔다.

After the success of the two art fairs’ collaboration last year when they ran alongside each other, they will join forces once again to “compete in good faith,” according to Hwang Dal-seung, founder of Keumsan Gallery and the head of the Galleries Association of Korea that operates Kiaf, while “enhancing cultural exchanges between aesthetes, art collectors, and curators from across the globe,” according to Patrick Lee, director of Frieze Seoul.

지난 해 두 아트페어의 파트너십을 통해 동시에 개최되어 성공적으로 진행할 수 있었던 것과 같이 올해도 다시 한번 힘을 합쳐 “선의의 경쟁을 펼치겠다”며 금산갤러리 대표이자 키아프를 운영하는 한국화랑협회장 황달성 대표는 말했다. 패트릭 리 프리즈 서울 디렉터는 “전 세계의 미술 애호가, 콜렉터, 큐레이터간의 문화 예술 교류의 강화를 위해 계속해서 협업하겠다”고 덧붙였다.

The organizers of both art fairs held a press briefing on Thursday at the Westin Josun Hotel in central Seoul where they announced an array of programs for this year’s event, which is the second edition of the London-based Frieze, one of the world’s top art fairs, and the 22nd for Kiaf, Korea’s biggest art fair.

두 아트페어의 주최측은 목요일 웨스틴조선호텔에서 기자간담회를 열고 올해 행사의 다양한 프로그램을 발표했다. 런던에서 창설된 세계 3대 아트페어 중 하나인 프리즈는 올해가 2회째 열리는 행사고 국내 최대 아트페어 키아프는 올해가 22회째다.

Frieze and Kiaf will kick off with a preview event for VIPs only on Sept. 6 at COEX in Gangnam, southern Seoul. The event will run through Sept. 9 for Frieze and Sept. 10 for Kiaf. Galleries for Kiaf will be set up in Halls A and B and the Grand Ballroom located on the ground floor. Frieze galleries will be set up at Halls C and D located on the third floor.

프리즈와 키아프는 오는 9월 6일 강남 코엑스에서 VIP들을 위한 프리뷰 행사로 포문을 연다. 프리즈는 9월 9일까지, 키아프는 10일까지 진행되고 키아프에서 선보여지는 갤러리들은 홀 A, B 그리고 그랜드 볼룸이 있는 1층에서, 프리즈를 통해 오는 갤러리들은 홀 C 와 D가 있는 3층에 부스가 마련된다.

“The two fairs together have anchored Seoul as an important event on the art and culture calendar and I’m really excited to watch the second edition of the Frieze Seoul being held here and become a part of this great cultural week,” Lee said. “Many galleries were happy last year to be here. The fair remains similar in size [as last year]. I very much like that size for an art fair because it allows for a good amount of engagement between visitors and the galleries.”

패트릭 리 프리즈 서울 디렉터는 “두 아트페어로 서울은 미술 캘린더의 주요 거점으로 자리매김하였다”면서 “이곳에서 열리는 두번째 프리즈 서울이 미술주간의 일부가 되어 개최되는 것이 매우 기쁘다”고 말했다. 그는 또한 “작년에 참여했던 많은 갤러리들이 매우 흡족해 했다”면서 “올해 프리즈 서울은 작년과 비슷한 규모로 이 규모는 방문객과 갤러리들간의 적당한 소통을 가능하게 하기 때문에 좋은 크기다”라고 덧붙였다.
