SK ecoplant will supply solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) to a data center in Singapore.

The company said Monday that it signed a SOFC supply contract with GDS, China’s largest data center operator, to supply and install fuel cells for a data center in Singapore. It will be the first application of SOFCs in a data center in the country, according to SK ecoplant.

SK ecoplant will oversee the engineering, procurement and construction of the fuel cells at the data center.

SOFCs are electrochemical devices that convert the chemical energy of fuel and an oxidant directly into electrical energy.

SK ecoplant previously built a fuel cell system for hospital facilities with Bloom Energy in the United States.
