New national museum housing annals of Joseon Dynasty opens in Pyeongchang

A ceremony to mark the opening of the new National Museum of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) took place on Saturday in Pyeongchang. The new state-run museum in Gangwon will be the new home to more than 1,200 pieces of relevant artifacts, including 75 volumes of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and 82 volumes of the Uigwe, manuscripts for royal protocols.

The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, or Joseon Wangjo Sillok, is thought to be the longest continual documentation of a single dynasty in the world. It is listed in Unesco's Memory of the World. Before being transferred to the new museum, the documents had been stored at a royal storage Pyeongchang, Gangwon.

The opening ceremony was attended by Choi Eung-chon, chief of the Cultural Heritage Administration, Gangwon Gov. Kim Jin-tae and other lawmakers. The official opening of the museum is Sunday.
